I was thinking of seeing if that fit but one, they're hollow and weaker and two, the genuine ones are kinda pricy if it breaks.

BUT!!! My friend is keeping his '74 CL200 in my shed because he has some work he needs done to it (when I/we have the time) and his axle is the perfect size. I actually have it in there now tightened and hitting the end with a hammer. Only thing is it's not a hex head but a round head with a hole in it. You have to use a screw driver to make it a T handle so you can't really get a lot of torque on it.



Thanks! If this fails I'll try the oil filter bolt.

Oil filter bolt doesn't fit. It's too big. Do you mean drain plug? I think that's the right pitch but it says it's a 12mm.

Ok guys, this thing isn't coming off. Let me just describe what I'm doing so you know I'm not doing anything wrong. I took off the rotor bolt and I am using the axle off my friend's CL200. It's a 16mm 1.5 pitch axle. I screwed it in to where I took out the bolt and am tightening it by hand as much as I can. Then I'm hitting it with a hammer. Not budging. How hard should I be hitting? I don't want to smack it out of the vice. The axle has a slight taper on the tip, could that not be pushing the crank squarely?

There are pictures above which show everything.

I bought a M16 x 1.5 bolt, and mine popped off in seconds. Thread the bolt in tight, then hit the head of the bolt with a rubber/plastic mallet. The bolt will probably be a bit lose again now, tighten it, hit. Repeat.

Ok finally got it off. Mine was a lot harder to remove than what I've seen people describing. I didn't like using the axle because the end has a taper to it. It potentially could be ballooning the crank end instead of pushing against it properly.



I had to get a bolt. $1.20 from The Nutty Company. Good thing they're 15 minutes from my house. No other store had this exact one. Home Depot actually had an M16 but it was a 2.0 pitch, not 1.5. And yes, my hands are way less impressive than Dave's.



I lubed it up and was cranking on it pretty hard and smacking the heck out of it and no movement. So I used my propane torch, heated it for a few minutes and with a few good smacks it loosened up and popped off.

Now a question about oil seals. I bought a kit off Ebay and the crank seals it came with don't have "lips" on one side like the OEM ones do. Is this normal? One of the seals I think is LYO (Lian Yu Oil Seals) and the other seems to be NGK (it also says TC on it. But with a Google search NOK is an oil seal manufacturer which has TC type seals. Maybe typo or maybe NGK also makes seals.)

My question is should I get genuine Honda crank seals with the lips or just use these seals without any lips? DavidSilverSpares.com has them in stock for like $8 each.

you can substitute a couple of the seals from your local bearing service,honda liked to make oddball sizes like 13.7mm ID,then if you use a 14 ID itll leak.

Yeah, I see the oddball sizes. I found genuine Honda for everything on Partzilla and DavidSilverSpares. Everything but an oil seal plug which has been discontinued. Don't know if I want to search far and wide for it or if the aftermarket one I have will be good enough. The one I have looks identical and has the same dimensions written on it.

I'm sure everyone goes through this but before I tore this apart the cases were pretty much bone dry. I'd hate to make this leak and have to tear it apart again.

Do any of the seals get a sealant on them or do they go in dry? I have Loctite 518 for the case halves but don't think it can be used on rubber to metal.

Ok, scratch that, I actually found that piece. Partzilla says they don't have it but that they can get it from Honda so I ordered it. But my question still remains about the sealant on rubber parts.

Oh ok, that's just the normal gasket sealant stuff? I'm seeing Gasket Sealant 1 that says hard setting. I'll check that out, thanks Dave.

So I seem to have thrown away the oil filter spring seat with the oil filter. #8 in the partsfiche. http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb550k-1978-usa_model7222/partslist/E++11.html#results

Can I use any washer that fits so the spring doesn't chew up the rubber on the filter? Or is the thickness paramount to operation?

Ok, so back to work on the bike. Starting assembly of the head. Valves lapped and look nice and even. I'm installing the new springs I got and the inner spring has a tighter coil on one end. Does orientation matter for this kind of thing? My gut says no but if I were to install them I'd put the tight coil side down. Any thoughts?

Hm, ok so a little snag perhaps. I bought springs from Dynomanperformance.com. Got the 30-4045 KPMI springs. On Dynoman's website it says it's for years 72-78 but on KPMI's site the same springs say they're for 74-76 and that they're high lift springs. KPMI also has the 30-3046 springs that say are 74-78 and are standard lift.

Do I have to return these and get the correct ones? I see that these I bought are a little longer than my OEM springs.
