Invest in some high quality cutting fluid, Dave. I have great results with Walter brand products (their Stainless and Aluminum cutting fluids). And buy yourself a good quality set of eyewear to protect your peepers as you get going  8)

Thanks Cal, I'll look into that fluid.

I've got a good set of safety glasses already. Had some very close calls regarding blindness in the past so I don't mess around with eyes!

Ouch!  I've had a grain of sand stick to and scratch my cornea.  VERY uncomfortable.  I can only imagine how much more unpleasant it is to have a shard of metal poking into your eyeball!  :o

I've had metal in the eye but nothing a magnet couldn't get rid of. But I did have a screw driver in the eye about a 1/4". I was working with my brother replacing the shoes on his drum brakes. He was prying and I, like a complete idiot, stuck my head in to see why the drum wasn't popping off and he slipped. I was wearing regular rx glasses and the screw driver pushed the lens out of the frame and against my eye, it then slid off the lens and up between my eye and eye socket. Completely recovered with no damage but I had a small hole in my eyelid. It was awesome. If he was using more force I bet it would have gone into my brain, haha.

I have had metal in the eye before while in college taking machine tools class where we were taught how to use a lathe, mill, etc. If was a great class and not a silmple task to use all the techniques taught.  Knurling a piece of steel isn't always easy and it was a one shot deal to get it right. If you screwed up you had a lot of machining to do to redo the part as we were making a small parallel clamp. Mine didn't turn out so great but I made up for that as much as I could by aceing the written and oral testing. Ended up with a B in the class. We didn't get a lot of practice before making the clamp.

I learned to respect those who had the talent to do the job.
I managed to get a piece of metal in the eye. They got it out. Without doing so, then an MR I would be likely to blind you as that metal would end up moved around the eye probably destroying your eyesight in that eye.

So I finally got the rocker shaft pins out. I don't know what happened, but I brought it down to a bike shop near me (I like the guy there) and they came out with hand tools. He unscrewed the nuts and tapped them out with an Allen key...I was really confused. Last year when I was tearing down the motor I did try and tap them out with a hammer but they didn't budge. Everything is in good shape and nothing is cracked or misshapen. All 4 came out this easily. And after everyone saying that they have to be pressed out with a lot of force makes me wonder why mine were so easily removed.

Anyway, I was talking to the owner about my bike. He likes it a lot and he loves and knows old Hondas really well. He just finished restoring a '69 750. I told him my plans for the 650 motor and he was like, "What?! You're keeping the stock cam? Dude, it's like easy horsepower! You're pretty much wasting your money with the porting and boring without doing a cam."

Am I stupid for thinking of keeping the stock cam? I was looking and didn't see any cams for the 650 on megacycle's PDF catalog. Actually I just double checked and they said they're no longer available. Any other places make cams that you guys recommend? I'm just trying to see prices for now.

I have seen and read about using a Megacycle cam for a 550 in a 650 head. 126-20 supposedly swaps right in with no clearence issues.

Considering that the 650 cam is a direct swap for the 550 I can totally see that working...thanks for the info. I just have to learn more about cams I guess. I have no idea what those numbers mean or what I should be looking into as far as lift and stuff.

The 126-20 is a pretty spice cam for the street. The 126-00 is a bit more tame, probably comparable to the 650 in a 550. It may not even prove worth doing. Ping Mike Rieck for his best guidance.

I can answer that question.  Mike recommended and ordered me a Megacycle 126-20 cam for my Dynoman 674 kit and Stage 2.5 port job motor.  Pretty much the same spec as yours, Dave.  No clearance issues, either.

Megacycle's hardweld rockers are expensive, but they are the cat's ass guys. The surface is tough and the pads are better than new. OEM may be less money but don't compare. Use them with any cam.

That's true. I couldn't do that even if chicks dig that more.

So I'm looking around for prices and can't find any. Does Megacycle list prices for cams and rockers? I'll ask Mike for a quote.

Oh and two more things, what of the tach drive and tach? Does this mean that I'm going to have to use a 550 tach drive and tach?

Also, I had my piston domes and skirts coated so is it likely that I'll have to fly cut valve cutaways and then get them recoated? Any chance on different skirt thickness/clearance issues?

Get the Mega products through Mike. Its a bit cheaper. Also, get an adjustable cam sprocket (or have him slot yours).

Tach: If you stick with the 550 gauge, then you need to use a 550 drive.
Pistons: the coatings won't effect clearances. If your piston domes need clearance due to the change in cam lift and valves, then reliefs would be necessary. Again, ask Mike he will be all too familiar I suspect. You don't have to re-coat the domes, you'll just have an uncoated cut if it is indeed required.

The Dynoman 674 pistons will not need be cut to accommodate a 126-20 cam.  The reliefs in the domes provide plenty of clearance.

"There are some things nobody needs in this world, and a bright-red, hunch-back, warp-speed 900cc cafe racer is one of them — but I want one anyway, and on some days I actually believe I need one.... Being shot out of a cannon will always be better than being squeezed out of a tube. That is why God made fast motorcycles, Bubba." Hunter S.
