Ah yes, the Hindle.

Just got to wipe it down with acetone to remove my greasy finger prints.

NOW what does Statler and Waldorf have to say about the brake lever? Haha

Fits great by the way, slides on the spigots very nicely. No need to force it and it clears everything. Comes close to the rear of the oil pan but no chance of rubbing.

Also, what's the deal with tightening the nuts when it doesn't really have any support behind it? Mine seem to be tight against the end of the threads. That's just choked up on a 1/4" ratchet.

Thanks I think so too! I ended up not using the extra extender piece. I didn't want it to run into the rear axle bolt and swing arm, it wasn't touching it, but it was close. Plus I like the look of a stouter system.

I'm very happy, but I do appreciate all suggestions for either aesthetics or performance...as long as nobody recommends chrome, haha.

Weirdly though, I don't mind the chrome ignition and alternator cover.

Installed the 650 coils to the 550 frame yesterday. Kind of a pain because the mounts on the coils are 90° from each other. Just cut off the ends of the mounts, drilled and tapped holes and they fit perfectly. It's eve adjustable to move the coils back or forward to get clearance for the plug wires.

And if anyone is curious, the 650 coils are 2.5 ohm and will work just fine with the PAMCO ignition.

I was thinking of the opposite and doing the stock 550 gearing 17/37. Might lose a little torque but it'll take advantage of these higher rpm cams we are using. I need to run some calculations to take into account the 18in rear wheel for the 550 as opposed to the stock 16in on the 650. Math.

Ok, that's an option. I haven't even begun to think about it yet. I'll hopefully just reap the benefits of your calculations, haha.

My initial thought was to run a standard 550 rear sprocket as I am running a 18" rear. I will likely go with Devin's aluminum sprocket to save some pounds. I'm still decided on the front engine sprocket and offset.

From forum research it looks like using the 550 gearing is the way to go. One member states that the 17 front sprocket was the best upgrade he has made to his 650. 17/40 will get your gearing very close to stock 650. I'm using devins rear sprocket as well Don for a 550.

I'd like to get your thoughts on moving the petcock. The actual cutting and welding part I have no issues with.

I got a Golan petcock which is very nice. It's like a little jewel. The only place I can find to put it with the carbs installed is right behind the carbs and above the pod filter. This is where I'll probably put it unless someone has a better idea. A couple concerns with this which I think won't really be an issue. One is the petcock is now further back and if I'm going down a hill with little fuel I might not get fuel to the carbs as much (I think I'd have to be pretty low for that to happen so probably doesn't matter). Second is the carbs will be moved forward and the angle at which the throttle cables attach will be fairly dramatic. Might cause tightness at the grip.

Another option is having an inline valve and a nipple coming off the current outlet. If I want to have a reserve, though, I'd have to run a tube in the tank and have two outlets. Plus an inline valve with two inputs and one output with a reserve setting. I use the reserve a bunch so not sure I want to eliminate it. Also, I don't know if I want to return the petcock because it's so nice

Thoughts? Anyone have pictures of solutions they came up with?

I did and the petcock is still too large. I wouldn't be able to move the selector lever and reaching into a hot motor probably wouldn't be fun especially if I need to switch to reserve on the highway.

My issue with the throttle cables is probably because they're original and the rubber is stiff. I have a new OEM clutch cable and speedo cable and those things can be tied in a knot.

It's hard to tell from the photo. Is the throttle linkage to the carburetors also interfering with the gas tank or is it only the petcock?

If it is only the petcock, could you relocate the petcock (using a Pingle) to another rearward location?

That's where I'm planning on putting the petcock, directly over the #1 filter. Even if there was room I wouldn't put it over the exhaust and have the fuel line route over the engine. But even so, there's no room, haha.

The throttle linkage bracket is between the tank tunnel, so no interference there. And I'm using a Golan petcock. I know Pingel makes various petcocks, but the Golan is roughly the same size as a typical Pingel and about $50 cheaper give or take. So a Pingel wouldn't allow for more room.

Pros & cons to both;
* Closer to the motor is better for performance, but that will also heat up the Carb bowls more so a heat shield may be prudent.
* Farther back will allow space for Petcock (as well as room to installing Vacuum fittings), But you will need to support the rear of the Carbs to keep them from bouncing up & down, causing float bob & air leeks around the rubber manifolds.

I'm thinking a happy medium is somewhere between. More forward, for a rear mount petcock. but still back enough to leave room up front for the Vacuum fittings & possibly a heat shield, then still support the back of the carbs for good measure. Hopefully that would allow you to get the petcock a little more forward to avoid running dry down hill or during heavy braking. Also, you wouldn't want the petcock tube hitting the top of the tank from inside.
If you don't mind getting fancy with tank, you could also install an inner baffle about mid section of the lower left side, to slow down the forward fuel slosh.

Ah yes, vacuum fittings. Thanks for reminding me. When I make these spigots I need to have a little more space between insulators and carbs to put sync sticks. CRs don't have sync ports.

The tank baffle is an interesting idea. I could easily slit the tank and slide in a perforated "wall". If this is an issue under braking with the petcock far back I'll definitely keep this in mind. BUT with your dual disc setup which I have I won't be hard braking for that long before I'm stopped, haha.
