Little update, finally got tires in and installed. Went with 100/90 19 front 110/90 18 rear Avon Roadriders. Looks great and rear fits under my seat pan without the risk of rubbing. I did have to cut and weld the front fender lower onto the tire. I hate the look of a fender that's too far from the tire. Looks like it's wearing a hat that's too big.

Also machined a spacer to replace the speedo gear. Thanks Stev-o for the idea. I know Godffery sells them but now that I can machine parts...well...

Really nice machine work!
Could you post a pic of the front wheel spacer?

Question for the smart people: all our bikes have left to right play in the front sprocket if you're sitting on the bike (in and out if you're facing the sprocket). I know this is normal, but do you think this is engineered slop for chain function?

I got a 520 front sprocket from Sprocket Specialists and it ended up being fairly loose in this direction. I made a spacer to go behind it and it now has no wiggle room. It's secured very well on the output shaft.

Thoughts?

Really nice machine work!
Could you post a pic of the front wheel spacer?

Here you go. On the left side of the spacer I added a small shoulder or protrusion to be sure the spacer butted up against the axle and not the fork. Hope it helps!

Nice work!  8) Looks like there are shoulders on both sides.  Thanks, the pics do help.  ;)

Nope, just the one shoulder. The inside portion of the bearing in the wheel is proud like a 1/16". It's up against that. ;)

That's a 520 sprocket Dave, with a "C" clip to locate? It's better to allow it to center on the shaft while driving the chain. In other words room to move. If there is a little misalignment the drive sprocket takes it up.

If it's a 520, their sprockets don't have a wider center section (or at least didn't used to) and will "wiggle" more on the shaft. I like a 530 width center spline with a 520 width sprocket. (if that's understandable) JT offered those, if you can find them, or the other option is thinning a 530. Advise your neighbours if you do this because the operation will wake the neighborhood. (how do you spell squeal!!)

Not a c clip, but the typical plate that you rotate and bolt to the sprocket. Yeah, I felt that a little float is good so I just installed and loctited it.

And yes, it's a thin sprocket all the way through. Not with a 530 width so it does wiggle on the shaft a lot more. I didn't like that fact but I assumed it would be ok.

I looked forever and only found 2 places for a 520 front sprocket for a 650 (or 550 for that matter, same sprocket). I didn't see JT selling any 520 sprockets for this bike. I found one JT a while back, ordered it, and I turned out it was mislabeled and was a 530.

I was thinking of turning a 530 down and I tested it with an old sprocket. I had to wear earplugs, haha. I think my lathe just doesn't have the rigidity. It's a small 6" Craftsman/Atlas. It just skated over the sprocket even with a carbide insert. AND it being an interrupted cut...forget it!

The narrower sprocket will be ok, but I like a wider seat too. But in my case I'm using a CB360 countershaft which uses a shaft spline with a 1mm wider (22x25mm) female spline but I need to use 550 sprockets (21x25mm) so I hold out for the wider sprocket center to compensate some. No problems to date.

Oh ok, I see what you're saying. But yeah I do wish my 520 sprocket was a little wider (it's only thinner by a bit but it's enough to cause noticeable wiggle) but what are you gonna do. I doubt I'll have an issue but it will be in the back of my mind. I'll be worrying a lot when I start this thing up, haha

Nice machine work Dave.   Now I wish I had a lathe!
I enjoyed the wood lathe in shop class and metal lathe when I was a machinist.

You're probably used to a man's lathe. I've got a small 6x18 Atlas/Craftsman. Picked it up from Craigslist for something like $400 with a bunch of extra stuff. One of the best purchases for the shop.

Thanks, I'm new but turning is fun as hell.

Ordered the Motogadget Chronoclassic with the dark LCD. Should come this week. :)

Also, unrelated, my iMac #$%* the bed, got to order a new one, damn! Good thing I have many backups.

Anyone (Cal?) that has the chronoclassic and put the speedo sensor on the front sprocket have any pictures of it? Did you just glue the magnet to the sprocket, or drill a small recess then epoxy it in place?

I am blessed to have Dave doing R&D (I have the same gauge but am woefully behind him in progress).

I was looking at that but at $15 I'll just drill a hole in the bolt head on the lathe :))

On the Motogadget Chronoclassic, there is a white/red wire that's not talked about in the manual. Any one know what that is?

Also, the manual says the Tach wire is supposed to connect to the coil switched ground. Is that the yellow and blue wire or is that the black wire to the coils?

Made my little bracket for the speedo sensor and epoxied in the magnet in the sprocket bolt. I love that this is possible so you see no cables or wires coming from the forks.
