Dave, would like to see the HP and torque figures for your build, it will be a benchmark for rest of us.

No problem, Kemp. Once I get the sheet I'll post it here.

After a ride I heard the tappet noise again. I'm checking it again now and I see it enlarged about .001" on the exhaust and probably .0005" on the intake. Still no leaks but in talking with Mike this isn't abnormal and the valve train will settle and either shrink or grow as it breaks in. So far I'm not worried about it.

Valves seem to be leveling out. After more riding I checked the valves and some didn't have to be adjusted. The ones that did only a hair...may even have been passable but I adjusted them anyway. Valve noise still there but not nearly as loud as before. I assume this is just what this valve clearance sounds like.

Good they stabilized quickly...was unaware of them stretching a bit like that.  How many miles of seat time have you managed to squeeze in?  Breaking in a motor is so difficult to maintain the restraint needed to give it the best break-in experience.

So far about 150 miles. I'm not taking it easy on the motor, doing a lot of rev ups and hard pulls to about 6k in all gears and a lot of engine breaking. It's not that easy to keep the revs moving, haha.

Happy 4th everyone!

« Reply #1659 on: July 05, 2017, 08:23:59 PM »
Just got back from the dyno. What a day.

First, the clutch was slipping on the dyno at high rpm even when Rick (the dyno master) didn't have much resistance on it. We removed the clutch cover and he was going to shim the springs but the shims were too wide for the recess. Then we decide to try stiffer springs but the springs he had were also a hair too wide for the seats. We removed the clutch, milled out the seats on his Bridgeport mill to accept the wider/stiffer springs. We ended up going with 2 stock springs and two stiffer springs. Equals out to about 15% more holding power. Didn't slip after that. Awesome!

Then, all the jets I bought ended up to be too big. He had 3 #90 jets in stock so he soldered a larger jet closed and drilled it to a #90. Eventually went up in drill sizes to a hair over 94.

He didn't want to solder and drill the pilots.

All in all I need to get 4 main jets at #95 size and 4 pilot jets at #50 size, readjust the mixture screw and I should be golden.

Even with the drilled jets I'm extremely happy with the result. 69.6 max HP (I'm calling it 70) and 42.8 max torque. Rick was also happy with the result, especially the flat torque curve :)

Thanks Rick and MRieck!

Carb settings I started with:
115 main
60 pilot
YY6 needle 3rd slot from top

Ended up with (and with what I have to buy)
95 main
50 pilots
YY6 needle 4th slot from top

That's 70 at the wheel.  More at the crank -- probably more like 76 at the crank.  And a very nice, flat torque curve.

My 836-ported-and cam'd 750 made more horsepower but weighed much more -- I'm fairly certain this 50/550 has a better hp-weight ratio and is likely as fast or faster and definitely more agile.

Any idea on overall weight? Race bike is down to 392 wet and after a motor build should be at 80-82hp at the wheel. Curious how this stacks up? Shame these motors aren't legal in AHRMA as they might be giant killers.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Not sure on weight, I'll need to break out the bathroom scales.

I haven't even ridden it yet and I'm going to be super busy the next few days. Can't wait to experience it.

Yeah Rick was fast and willing to do what it takes. Great guy. Also helps to have a full machine shop at your disposal :)

Sure, I can post plugs pictures. I was idling for a little while under his giant fans last time the bike was run so the plugs might appear rich with the larger than we wanted pilot jet.

I suspect that's Rick Stetson who he went to. All rumors are true about him; super knowledgeable, extremely helpful, and genuine Prince of a Gentleman (even if he's from MA  ;D ;)).

Rick Stetson, the man, the legend. Beautiful shop, friendly dog, but my buddy I came with didn't like his Red Socks phone case that much, haha.

Good power and nice curves especially the torque. An excellent example of less can be more in regard to the jet sizes. Glad everything worked out well Dave and it sounds like Rick treated you well despite knowing me. ;D
The 650 head would make great power for vintage racing but I would source out different valve springs from the Kibblewhite 550 pieces.

I hate to ask this, and I probably know the answer, but hell who cares. Regarding the break in procedure, after the first oil change how soon to most people ride normally and switch to regular oil? Right away? After 1000 miles? My plan was just to ride normally from here on out, but trying to keep from sustained revs. I'm still on the second oil change (break in oil) and will probably change to my regular zinc oil (non synthetic) as it gets warmer in a couple weeks. I have 10w30 in there now, I want to put in 20w50.

I know, there's no consensus. So feel free to ignore me, haha.

Yay, bike problems! Currently in a parking lot.

Bike was feeling low on power at full throttle and then it got worse and worse. Stuttering and a little backfiring. It was idling ok at stop lights. Then going up a hill I had even less power and I just limped it into a parking lot and then it shut off. Now it's not starting.

I was first thinking fuel but I'm on reserve and it's still not starting. I have plenty of fuel in the tank.

It felt similar the time my main jet fell out. Could be the solder that's on one main jet broke loose and is now fouling the plug?

Maybe timing? Can't fault the C5 yet though.

Could it be the valve lash is growing again and grew to the point where it's not allowing it to run?

Hmm...

Edit: tail pipe seems overly sooty.

Your charging system might not be working properly. I highly doubt solder would fall out . If valve lash increased that much you would hear it.
