The whole 'infict mortal pain on a potential scumbag thief' was tried once by someone who rigged his bike to give a tazer-like shock to anyone who tried to tamper with it. Problem was the potential thief claimed that he wasn't a potential thief (was "just looking at the bike") and the owner was charged with bodily harm!

I know it's expensive, but i like the idea of a hidden GPS transmitter somewhere on the bike, so that its location can be pinpointed at any time if it gets stolen. at least that way you stand a better chance of seeing the scumbag face to face.

In the case of stealing I am in favor of Louisville Slugger type of reminder why people should not steal. I am with El Cheapo on this. No One steals from me and gets away with it. If I can not just straight up kick their ass I will make sure that they get paid back in some other unfortunate way. I think all thieves when caught should be tattoed with the words thief on the back of their hands so we can all know right away what type of low life that they may be. Thieves and liars are the worst. I really can not stand liars either.

Heres an anti theft idea.
Rig it so the front caliper locks up when you reach 70 mph. You might not see the bike again but you won't hear about the thief again either.

and if they investigate..well ya see officier the bike had a serious mechanical failure in the front end causing the brake to lock...lol

I've got an English bike mag somewhere that has a detailed plan on how to build a "Dog #$%* Bomb" to deter thieves from stealing your bike outta your garage, in reality it'd be better in a car park, as you'd have less to clean up if it went off, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Perhaps, being a bit more politically correct, there would be a way to rig up a dye bag which would go off if some miscreant tried to steal the bike. Then they would be marked and identifiable, or at the very least forced to stay in hiding until the dye finally washed off.

Not always. Some people are so stained by the smell of dog #$%* that the stink will never come off of them. Everyone around here knows that if come to my home to harm my family or to rip me off you run the risk of meeting me and Mr. Mossburg. Both of us spit fire when pissed off. Rock salt fired out of a Mossburg pump has a nice deterrent value. When I used to race cars I had a fella get really pissed at me and he swore that he was going to come to my house and "crack my skull open". Mr. Mossburg changed his mind about that. Not to mention that I was more than willing to split his noggin right then and there with a 3lb sledge hammer. I am not a bad ass by any means but I can get quite hostile when ripped off or threatened with physical harm.

Seriously though,
whenever you leave your bike and it is out of your sight,
no matter What anti-theft system you put on it,
it is GONE! if someone really wants it.

Without getting into politics... Even with gun laws, etc... The bad guy would have the gun anyway. If he's stupid enough to rob someone's house, he's probably stupid enough to steal a gun from somewhere. Then since I'm a good guy, I won't have a gun to defend myself.

That's probably true mate, but then you only need to drive down to your local shopping mall and pick up another one with your groceries, don't you?

While I'd say it's relatively easy to buy a hunting rifle (to a point), buying a handgun is a completely different story. I've never personally bought either, so I'm not entirely sure. I know regardless what gun you get, you have to register it to your name, run a background check (no felons can own any gun), wait something like 8 weeks... I think you have to take a gun safety course in some states, or at least provide a "passed" certificate. Like I said, I've never had to buy one, though (still use my dad's Winchester .30-30 for deer hunting and my grandpa's WWII-era pump .22 short for everything else).

I agree.  If they want it they will get it one way or another. If I get off my bike to go inside anyhwere then I try to make sure that I can see it form inside.

Are you sure you're not thinking of the movie "Christine" (based on the book by Stephen King, but done by John Carpenter) in which the main character "Arnie" when asked why he didn't report the hoodlum that "defacated on his dash board" replied "#$%* wipes off"  ?
I don't remember much about "Tommyknockers" as I've only read it two or three times and that having been a few years ago.

May be in "Tommyknockers" as well, but I've seen the movie "Christine" about 100 times and that's one of the lines that stuck with me.  I'd add a couple of my other favorite lines, but they're a little graphic ;D :-X ;)

Nah mate, Tommyknockers I thought, but maybe it was "Needful things"? In one chapter there's a scene where a lady sells a raffle ticket to an old bastard who took great delight in telling her he'd wiped his ass on athe dollar note he paid with, to which she replied something like "Oh well, #$%* washes off".

I've got all his books here, but it's 30 degrees C (86 deg F) here in Oz today, so I'm not going to spend too much time looking for that passage when I can be out in my garage twirling spanners, ha ha! (gotta get that racer looking like a real bike!) Cheers, Terry. ;D

Not this one Dusty, it's my endurance racer project with that big 6 gallon alloy tank and 836cc engine, but the K1 Kruiser with the 1166cc engine (next project) will be more of that laid back "Harley" style.

Nothing wrong with Harleys mate, (as you know) if I can find an old "Sturgis" going cheap, I'm buying it! A retired SAS major that I know bought one new in 1981 and loaned it to me on and off for a couple of years back in the '90's, it was a great bike, and chicks loved it, I didn't have to ask them if they wanted a ride, I had to fight them off it, no #$%*! Cheers, Terry. ;D
