On my aching feet and back
« on: September 07, 2014, 02:41:54 AM »
Been working on a concrete floor for almost 30 years and its taken its toll. And being 57 has something to do with it also Im sure.My current boots Caterpiller brand have been ok but are just completely wore out so I need a new pair of some type of comfortable work boot that's good on concrete. I also make a habit of wearing the same boots when I ride my Honda's also. Been looking at reviews of several ones but just wanted get some sohc4 members input and maybe whats worked good for you.

I also wear my daily work boots when I ride,i have "blue steel"might be called something else stateside?i also have "red back"both have great sole cushion,i have to jump and step down off the truck over and over duing the day and good sole helps,im also your age,i have four pairs of boots and I find swapping them around also helps, especially if you get a pair soaking wet!

I'm a structural steel fabricator so my boots take a beating and I switched to Red Wings a long time ago however they are expensive. the pair I have cost me $200+. I haven't tried every brand of boot available but the Red Wings I have suit my needs in being reasonably comfortable and durable. Mine are in my locker at work but I believe the ones in the link are the pair I have however I really wouldn't recommend them for riding because the metatarsal guard on them can make for clumsy shifting.

My feet are 58yo now and I reckon that the back trouble starts in your boots.
For years I wore these thick cotton socks but I've swapped 'em for thin cotton socks that let the ankles and feet breath and also lets the blood pump through a lot better.

As long as the feet are good and the heads good, everything else in between should tick over ok.

My missus grandmother lived to 97 and she always said that you have to look after your feet no matter what.
If I was you

I don't know if you can get them in the states, but I wear Rossi boots.  They are comfotable out of the box and my last two pairs have lasted at least two years each.  I spend all day on my feet on concrete floors and I can end the day with barely an ache in my feet, I wish I could say the same for my back, but that is more to do with what I do not what I wear.  ;D

I've always worn Wolverine boots, both to work and ride in. I have flat feet and have found them to be the most comfortable.... Just my $0.02.  :D

I work commercial construction spending a lot of time on concrete and had to switch to something with a shock absorbing sole. Both Wolverine and Red Wing have models with some form of shock absorption. My back has been much happier since.

Really stiff workbooks can sometimes help as they reduce side movement or rolling of the ankle and other. Joints..

most construction sites here have outlawed elastic sided pull on boots, they must be lace up,thatll be for ankle rolling I guess?

I recommend TimberLand Pro. They feel broke in right outta the box and they blow away any boot Ive ever worn. Bout 125 bux and come in a steel toe or carbon fiber toe. The carbon toe provides a little more toe room in the the cap width so that's a plus too.    Boats  8)

When I was a riding instructor we advised all new riders not to wear work boots (with steel caps) as riding boots but to buy proper MC boots.

Was just thinking: if possible..get rubber mats/cushions if you're working on concrete floors..if that's feasible/practical. A lot of the problems for us oldsters..seems to be in getting enough cushioning (as we age..we lose the cushioning and resiliency in our spinal columns and joints) as we stand and work..especially if involving lifting of any sort.

Good shoes/boots help..but are not always enough to relieve the arthritic conditions that inevitably come with age..I suggest..

I was forced to wear boots with metatarsal gaurds that covered most of the top of your foot. I tried leaving them at work but got in trouble. So I wore them out of work, got on my 750 and promptly got my foot stuck between the peg and shifter on a stop and fell over like a big dummy.
Anyway I went to Walmart, to the DR Scholls machine stood on it and it told me what shoe insert to buy I did and they are great. My feet were in bad shape and promptly got better.  About $50 5 years ago. They are on their third set of shoes. I guess I could get new ones.
