Modular Cafe Racer Seat?
« on: September 28, 2006, 01:52:32 PM »
ElCheapo's New Products and Ideas thread got me thinking of what I'm going to call a Modular Cafe Racer Seat.

I've made a quick and dirty Photoshop example of what I mean:

So the front would have diagonal cut just past the second set of bolts and on the 3rd set you could either have the other half of your seat (re-apolstered over the wound of cource so they are just two seperate piece so close together thay appear as one) or a cafe-style fiberglass tail piece.

I can't think why it'd be all that hard to do. You could even make "me too" hinges for the fiberglass tailpiece bolts so it just goes directly over the other seat and there's no to remove it at all, it just hides under the fiberglass until you want to give someone a ride. I'm tempted to just go buy an wrecked pan and foam and give this thing a try. Can anybody think of why this might not work? Suggestions for how to make it better are of course also appreciated.

Kind of like the Triumph Thruxton that has the removable plastic cover on the passenger seat area, only make it taller.. I`ve kicked that idea around a bit too after I saw the first one, I`ve got an old seat that I just may get around to this winter.

That's how I made my 350f seat in avatar. In fact the rear cowl is held on by big peices of velcro so it could be taken off to give someone a lift in a pinch.

Man I like those Thruxtons. One of the finest looking new bikes out there IMHO

Sorry, just re-read your post. Mine's not cut in half, it's one peice and uses the original pan and hinges.

Wouldn't it be easier to keep two seats and use some sort of quick change pins to hold the seat down?  Better still might be a snap-release type setup.  That'd let you you create whatever Cafe seat you want, instead of compromising on a standard type seat that could be converted into a Cafe.  On the other hand, you'd need to be in the same place with the spare to do a change over.

that's what i'd go for, and you'd have to have all the parts of the "modular system" to do the change over, so that's really no different.

plus with the "modular system" or the thruxton's removable cowl you're not getting any of the weight savings.

--damn that bike is sweet.  easily the prettiest stock bike on the market....must not buy a thruxton.  must not buy a thruxton.  must.....
