Food for thought - Warning - Shocking Video Footage
« on: September 05, 2014, 11:03:58 AM »
This footage is receiving a lot of attention over here at the moment. If you're of a sensitive disposition, you may not want to watch, but personally I think every rider and would-be rider should see this.

Good to share that, thanks.

Any of us who ride are only ever a moment a way from a possible situation just like that.

Good of his parents to release the footage, could not have been easy.

That was hard to watch.  For me, videos of riding are not stressful to watch because of the rider usually.  What makes videos of aggressive riding scary are the constant, CONSTANT threats from any other vehicle on the road.  I'm not as scared of the rider messing up as I am of another car just doing something like just flat out turning into me.  Going in between lanes?  Oops, time for someone to open their door to empty their coffee cup or something.  Just random things happen, and the only thing you have control of is your bike.  This is why I try to ride like a grandma.

What was the car doing exactly?  I already forgot, who was at fault here technically?

Yup, I agree, probably why the police endorse it.

From the discussions on the news reports I picked up I believe the car driver was charged with causing death by careless driving - he admitted he didn't see the motorcycle, so I guess he was technically at fault. But then, the rider was doing a reported 97mph.

No winners here.

When going straight way, you have right of way, when turning, you wait until traffic is cleared.

There's a time and a place to go fast and I don't think that was one of the places ? poor bugger, the car driver not only said he didn't see the bike but they also didn't see the car behind the lad on the bike ?,  scary stuff .

its terrible it just happens so fast, that same scene has occurred thousands of times with the same result, even if the car saw him his approach speed would be hard to judge and would just assume he was doing what ever the limit is?

here im doing under the limit and pass a slower car,i just notice another car enter the road from a property on the left,he cuts it a bit fine but Im lucky I hadn't committed to passing that car, this is about as close as it gets sometimes?if I had been going fsater it might've been different?it all happens so fast, once again a nice straight road.

he was going too fast for that road but visibility was good and the driver should have seen him , if prosecuted he will blame it all on the speed of the rider and get away with a small fine .
the older i get the slower i ride , i would like to get a bit older yet .

The speed limit on that stretch of road is 60mph.

According to the news report the motorist admitted causing death by careless driving and got a 12 months community sentence in April and an 18 month driving ban. He was also ordered to pay £200 costs with a £60 surcharge and do 130 hours unpaid work.

Ride like everyone else is an idiot driver who's not even concentrating, most of the time you get "I didn't even see him"! What aren't you concentrating? There are others on the road apart from cars and trucks. Duh!

So sorry for the young man. :-\ :-X

I'm not an attorney, don't know the case law, but the Michigan statute says that a speeding driver forfeits his right of way:

5) The driver of a vehicle traveling at an unlawful speed shall forfeit a right of way which the driver might otherwise have under this section.

A young man from my neighborhood was killed when an elderly driver pulled out in front of his Speed Triple at the corner. She wasn't charged due to his speed.

That one really makes you think. Very sad for all involved. The guy was going too fast
in a place with too much traffic, pure and simple. I'm not throwing stones, and I am
not without sin. So very very sad....I've ridden for all but 13 years of my life. My son,
who can ride, has not followed in my footsteps, and sometimes I'm relieved he hasn't.
Especially after watching that. Be careful folks.

He's only there for MAYBE 1.5 seconds, but he's got your WHOLE lane during
that time.
