need help with cb550 wiring
« on: September 06, 2014, 11:20:03 AM »
I bought a CB500 with a CB 550 motor a couple weeks ago for 250. The bike was in pretty good shape other than it had no spark. I noticed that the ignition switch wiring was hacked and that was about it. My question is does anyone have a color simple wiring diagram with just the wires to make it run? No lights, turn signals, no battery, just the bare minimum.  Any help is appreciated! Also, here is a picture of the bike when I got it and how it sits now.

Thanks for the reply! My problem is that i want to see it run before I powdercoat the frame and make it a caferacer. Im just looking for the bare minimum wires. Basically coils, stator, and points

Just to hear it run you, you should be able to run 12v to the black white wires at the coils.

I'll second what MoMo said. Just jump the positive wire (black/white striped) to the positive battery terminal and the coils will spark if the contact breaker is intact.

Do I need to have the battery hooked up to do that method? The po left me with literally a yellow, blue, green wires, and a red with regulator and rectifier. I have some pictures if you need any to help me. Thanks guys!

Yes.  The alternator won't make power until it's electromagnet is activated by the battery.  And, you need electrical energy to make spark which comes for the battery at start up.

Yes.  Replace the alternator and regulator with a permanent magnet type system. (To keep lighting)  I've seen a thread where this was done.  I'm not sure it done to a 550, though.  The source system was created for an old british twin, I think.
Or change the spark system to a magneto type, such as the ARD.  But then, no lights can be powered as the stock alternator can't self excite without a magnetic field.

I want all of you to know I appreciate you knowledge very much. With that being said I think im just going to go back stock wiring and hid it under the seat. Do you recommend a battery small enough for under the seat?
