Air Compressor Advice Needed
« on: August 23, 2014, 11:10:00 PM »
As mentioned in the pissed off thread, my shop compressor shat itself. I nned some advice at what I need to look at for a diagnosis.
So far I have taken the drive belt off and switched on to see what happens. There's a "zap" sound and the it thows the power safety switch. I removed the wiring cover plate and repeated the above. This time there is a flash from somewhere near the  internal wiring terminals. A closer inspection shows what looks like an arcing track between a rivet near the centre terminal (orange wire) and the brass strap of the Z terminal (black wire). See pics. What would cause this? Could it be something a simple as worn brushes or a more serious short of some sort. I've had this comp for about 35 years and in the last year or so have replaced one starter cap and the presure cutout unit (Condor).
Also, the amature(?) still spins fine.

Yeah Krusty, get that old bugger fixed, you can buy new motors on eBay for cheap, and then it'll last longer than you will! (then you can leave it to me in your will...........) ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

This lad on Ebay is cheap mate.
http://stores.ebay.com.au/CONON-MOTOR?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

I went to order one the other day for my compressor but the fcuka wanted 200 odd bucks to send it to Darwin.
Somehow I'll get it here for less than that.

If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

Might keep your suggestion in mind Terry. As it happens we're off to see the Public Trustee tomorrow about getting our wills updated.

Took my compressor motor to a specialist shop for a diagnosis. It was DOA. The windings had an internal short. Advice was that it would cost more than a new one to rebuild it . New 3hp motor bought today off ebay from South Australia seller who has sold quite a number of this type and has 100% feedback. Should be delivered sometime next week.

I just ordered a 3hp from that Krotec mob yesterday Krusty.
It was 60 smackeroos delivered to Darwin and that Conon fcuka wanted 200 odd bucks.
Conon was 150 bucks for the motor and Krotec were 225 bucks so it worked out cheaper from Krotec bottom line.
They look the same in the pictures but Krotec reckon that their one does an extra 60 rpm.

Anyway, when she's here, I'll be able to get the Bead Blaster going again with the big air comp instead of that other little gay mongrol air comp that revs it's ring off every 15 seconds.
It's ok for pumping up tyres and Cane Toads but that's about all.  ;D

I had two poofter public servants living next door to me in Brissie who pissed me off, they went away for a couple of weeks so I filled up their wheelie bin with dead cane toads that I shot with my slug gun, then parked the wheelie bin with the lid open under their highset house. They never said a word to me, but moved out a week after coming back. I didn't miss them.............. ;D

Got the 3hp new motor a week ago  and its installed and running like a champion. Didn't even have to mod the mounting holes. The wiring was a little tricky to hook up as there is a nylon cooling fan blocking access to the terminals and I couldn't get it off. Using more than a little dexterity (not easy with short fingers), I got the job done. Don't know how I managed without my bead blasting cabinet  for the last couple of years, just put stuff off I 'spose.
Used it to clean the FJ1100 clutch MC and engine covers, a C72 Dream carb that was putrid, plus a few other bits and pieces.

Yeah mate, over here it wasn't unusual for someone to get a bag of prawns (shrimp) tucked under their car seats or in their air vents etc, if they stiffed the guy I used to work for at a gas station/repair shop, he was like a little angry Italian commando, he'd break into their cars in the middle of the night, secrete the seafood, and be out of there again with the non-paying customer none the wiser........... ;D
