77 550k Signal hookup! Soooo close need help
« on: September 05, 2014, 10:16:37 AM »
So I've been trying to get these front signals working for some time now. The other day I was able to get both running lights working without the blinkers.... Both blinkers working without the running lights.... And finally the right blinker and left running light working without the left blinker and right running light..... I'll post pictures as I get home but can anyone speculate on what the hell is going on here ? I'm thinking maybe my
Connections for the left blinker and right running light could be a problem? Cause if the opposites are working properly they must be wired correctly ?
Thanks guys

All stock components?  Or have you thrown an unknown aftermarket curve at us?

It should be pretty straightforward.  Just follow the connections described in the wire diagram.

The rear should have orange and green (or black wires with a green ring) for one side, and Blue and green for the other side.   Same for the front, but recall that the mounting positions are rubber isolated so there is a green connection to the wire harness green.

The blinkers are powered via a black wire (key switch source) to the blinker relay.  The grey wire from the relay routes up to the bar control which distributes power to either right or left bulbs.

Make note of the numbers on the signal bulb bases.  I think for 77 they still used the lower wattage 1034 front and 1073 rear.  These often get replaced with higher wattage 1157 and 1156 bulbs, which upset the signal flasher's rate of flash.

So I think these blinkers were switched at one point so that's y my oranges are pluging to blue and vice versa. In the top left u can see the black w/orange  and bottom right blAck w/light blue. With just those plugged in my right blinks and left running light works. My top right (black w white n light blue) and bottom left black w white and orange aren't turning on the left blinker and right running light. Sorry If I'm missing something very obvious

But I just checked and I got 1157 bulbs in there... Weird that one side would work and not the other

blk wire with blu/wht bands plug into blu/wht stripe wire
blk wire with org'/wht bands plug into org'wht stripe wire
blk wire with org band only plug into solid org wire
blk wire with lt blu band only plug into solid lt blu wire

Thats how mine are, but i have a K0...just did mine last night.

Looks like they are crossed in the pic...

Front bulbs are dual element.  The run light element (white stripe) tuns off when the main filament  is selected.

What I don't see are the green wires that should go from the headlight mount bolt to the green main harness bundle.   Absolutely necessary.

Remember that each filament needs two connections, power from the POS battery terminal and return to the Battery NEG terminal.   If you don't provide a proper path, electricity will find a way through other filaments and pathways, lighting things that shouldn't illuminate.

DH I will check when I get home but I'm pretty sure the previous owner (my dad) had removed the signals and put them back on backwards that's y I switched them. But then again I'm not sure if I actually tried the other way...

The green wires from each light go to the main green harness bundle.

Geez I'll feel dumb if I just switched em....

I think TT was talking about a green wire from a headlight mounting bolt (one is just visible in the pic) to the harness green wire. There should be a weird washer thing under the nut with a green wire coming off of it. This lets ground current avoid running through the steering bearings - that causes damage to the bearings. Maybe the wire is on the other side, out of the picture?

Because the fork "ears" are rubber isolated, there needs to be a ground wire from each headlight bolt (ultimately from the signal stalk) to the green wire harness.
