My name's Nick and I was just gifted a 1980 Honda CB650 that was half converted to a cafe racer styled bike and then forgotten about. This is my first bike project, so I'm anxious to learn all I can.

I don't have too many pictures or details yet, but I am really anxious to get this build thread started.

I'm going to keep moving in the direction of cafe; I'm attracted to the concept of simplified-minimalism. Additionally, I'm attracted to not thinning out the wallet too much    which can be difficult with projects.

Where did you get your shop manual?

The shop manual was downloaded, printed out, and assembled in a 3 ring binder. I'll dig up the link for you when I get a chance.


I have access to a 3D printer and a small cnc machine (good for wood and plastic - no metal). I've been looking for a project to experiment with utilizing this tech. and the simplicity of a cafe bike really stood out to me.

I'm also interested in custom circuits, looking to drive costs down with a group buy potentially.

Here's some picture of the CNC, 3D printer, 3D-printed robot/parts, and some circuit stuff I have in the works.

I'll post more about the bike when I get a better look at her.

I'm interested in what you do with this bike. My back burner project will be to take advantage of the light weight of the 550 and stuff a 650 with a big bore with enough power to equal a mildly bore out 750. I love the 750 motor and the 550 weight.

+1...I have copies of the shop manual but it only includes the '79 and '80.  That one appears to cover all years.

Exactly! I've seen the manual for the 79-80, but I have a 82.
