'74 350F Petcock peculiarities
« on: September 11, 2014, 12:53:52 AM »
I have 2 tanks and 2 petcocks for my one bike. I recently got it working after not hearing it run since 2002. I had to service the petcock, as it leaked in the off position. After discovering I had a Brain space this morning (found the new seal in the unit not mounted on the bike), I set about on the 3rd time trying to stop this leak in the off position. No matter what i do, the new seal leaks in the off position on either petcock. I even refaced the levers to perfection. I thought I had it licked since it sat out in the sun for 3 or 4 hours with no fuel coming out of the bowl overflow pipes underneath, but after I parked it inside and went out several hours later, it was leaking. I'm at a loss, and more or less wanting a new petcock, but not finding any in the usual places. I am going to try another new seal, but the one I have is brand new and just doesn't look bad on either side. This little bike is all there, only the exhaust is not original, but it works fine (unrecognized 4 into 1), and it's performance is just what it should be. I only need to replace the carb gaskets and o-rings, they are just worn out, and freshen the top-end since it's leaking oil. As rare as these are, i'm just gonna hang on to it. Err I digress further, if some one has experienced a leaker in the off position and how they stopped it, or if anyone wants to sell me a known good petcock, I'm all ears!

Is this the petcock that mounts with two screws? If so, did you replace the fiber washers (#9 in the picture below) that go on those screws. If you didn't, it'll leak in the off position regardless of how well the petcock internals are functioning.

No I did not. Bingo! I wondered about that late last night; I believe you've hit on it. I'll report back as soon as I get them changed and that solves it. Thanks!

Solved! Here in my Dirt town Podunkville, there were no red Fiber Washers. Based on my years of experience, I installed 2 1/4" Copper Washers rounded from the punch side towards the petcock. No more Leaking! Thanks for rattling my Cage!!
