Will straight vinegar tarnish or remove zinc,cad.,nickel,etc. plating on spokes or factory bolts ?

Maybe throw a junk bolt or two in a jar with some vinegar and see? I know that white vinegar works awesome in a rusty gas tank. Takes a little time tho. Vinegar is acidic
I think.

I put a couple dimes(10 cent pieces) in some straight vinegar for an hr. and it looked like it was starting to turn a bit of copper color along the top of Roosevelt's head...

"silver"coins aint the same type of metal, they have nickel/copper and other hard alloys, they don't rust, these cheap treatments work on ferrous metals only like steel and cast iron, never use them on aluminium or zinc alloys itll mottle them or make them disappear!

Dave thanks for that  ;) ,I was hoping to hear something and you helped me so I wouldn't ruin some of my stuff.  I wonder if some of those Evaporust $20+ per gallon type quality rust treatments would harm the zinc plated type parts ?

Rather than get caught on the details, a little experimentation might be in order. If you're looking for perfect the choice must be new, but otherwise the reality is always cheap-right-fast , pick two and compromise. Besides the whole fun of it all is discovery. I hear molasses works well for rust removal, seen it on the forums. Best of luck

I used carb cleaner gloves and a green scrubby on my fender. Was a bit of elbow grease involved( not too much didnt wanna scratch) but I had the "rust" looking dirt of in about 2 hours

I'm considering putting my nice chrome front fender(it has just a little rust)into a container of straight vinegar to clean off the rust on top & bottom. How long should I leave it in ?

I think molasses is the best bang for your buck?i didn't even try and steel wool any of the original rust off this wheel, all it needs now is a rub with 0000 steel wool and soap!

we have an aussie tv show here "classic restos",the host goes around to peoples places and checks out their 60s-70s and older cars been restored,on one episode a guy had a huge round tank that fits an entire car body full of molasses mix!way to go!wouldnt be too hard to get a frame into a slim water tank?ive done a few fuel tanks and other small stuff tools of course.

Use with caution, gloves, mask, You can muriatic acid(home Depot), (its diluted Hydrochloric). It will remove rust in seconds, the fender was horribly rusty on the underside. Its very dangerous if not handled properly.
Phosphoric acid (tile cleaner) is better, less caustic.
thanks, Mark

Dace, how long did you leave that Cragar in the molasses? & was it a straight shot of it or a mix of water ?

bit over a week grcamna, its not fast but very effective and safe, the mix is about 4-1,i used a "wheelie bin" at work filled a couple of inches over the rim.

4 parts water to 1 part molasses? for a week; would 2 parts water to 1 part molasses work twice as fast for small rusty tools, etc. ?

I think its better a little thinner than 50/50,ive never really mixed it with any accuracy just by eye,its thick stuff and I think might run slower used just straight?the stuff starts fermenting and smells like a pub for a few days, then once the ferment stops it can smell a little sour but still seems to work forever?its never attracted ants or flys in my time using it,had the odd kamikaze moth in it though,if you have dry or cut skin itll sort of burn the cuts but hoses straight off.
