CB750 K4 Build
« Reply #525 on: February 04, 2017, 02:48:02 PM »
It's the little things that get you.

I had to make a small pin because I drilled out the carb rack in order remove the throttle rod so I could clean up and re-plate all the linkage.  Got the idea from the Hackaweek vids.

I also had to make a new collar that goes on the throttle rod.  I seemed to have misplaced the original.  I can't remember if I zinc plated it or not.  The plan was to have the carbs mounted on the bike today, but not sure it's going to happen.  I'm zinc plating the new collar at the moment and it takes a while.

Any chance you filled that little notch you got in the rod, from drilling the old pin out?
If not; your new pin may get caught in there and lock up your throttle.

Nah.

Installed the carbs, but I have to take them back off.  I forgot to install the four washers that go on the choke linkage before the small cotter pins.

My custom cables arrived.  Sure hope they fit.  Only one way to find out.

For the most part the cables worked out.  I had to send the push cable back and have a little bit a free play added.  It was about 10mm too short.

Today I sprayed the final coats of clear on the wooden tail section.  Next weekend I'm going to cut and polish the tank and tail section.

The carbs are pretty much ready to go.  Just waiting on a tee so I can hook up the fuel line.  I ordered an Airbox from Cognito Moto.  Hopefully I'll have it next week.

I had to take the CB750 off the lift today so I could install a new starter in my Chobber.  The CB750 looks so much better on the ground.  Can't wait to ride it.

Oh ya.... Looking so sweet.  What tank did you start with?  IT is going to be a sweet scoot.

Thanks.  It's a heavily modified Suzuki GT750 tank.  1975 I think.

Major milestone.  Just put oil in the bike, hooked up the starter wire, turned the key on and hit the start button.  So smooth.  Only thing better would be to put gas in it and hear it run.  Soon!

After some futzing I have a slightly modified Cognito Moto airbox that fits.

Simply beautiful, Bud!

What main jets do you plan to use with that airbox and exhaust?

What else is needed to fire her up?!

Thanks, Steve.  I ordered a spec'd jet kit and for the first attempt they recommended 115's for the two outside carbs and 117.5's for the two inside carbs.  If it's too lean they said to move the 117.5's to the outside and use 120's on the inside.

I need to redo one of the oil lines.  It leaks.  I didn't have enough line up inside the compression fitting to get a proper seal.  After that I think all I need is gas.  My sync gauges and IV bottle arrived yesterday.  Unfortunately, or depending how you look at it, it's my son's 18th birthday on Sunday.  I'm taking him to the Lone Star Throwdown Truck show in Conroe tomorrow and doing the birthday thing on Sunday.  I probably won't get to do much on the bike until next weekend, but I'm supposed to go on a ride that Sunday.  I still need to polish the gas tank.  I'll get there.

You've only been working on this 2.5 years, what's another month or two?!

FYI - I changed the jetting on the Park Racer a couple times, it's got 115's now and seems right.

Good to know about the jets.  The engine is basically stock except for the bolt on stuff.

I'm in no hurry.  I'm just trying to make everything as right as I can before the first fire up.  Any pointers you can give for that first start?

Basically stock except for the most important things for jetting: intake and exhaust.

Before start up, be sure you are getting oil to the top end.  Crank it with the kill switch off [if possible], pull your valve adj caps and look for oil there. Good luck!

I couldn't get the stainless steel oil lines exactly like I wanted.  Tired of messing with it.  Those stainless lines are very unforgiving.  For now I'm going to run hose.  Maybe someday I'll revisit it...maybe with copper.

I'm going to try to start the bike for the first time on Saturday.  Fingers crossed.

Thanks, Steve.  It's all an experiment so if that's the worst of it I'll take it.  I noticed the oil lines on the Park Racer.  Don't look stock.  Where'd they come from?
