That's a good idea.  You would probably want to turn the bolt and loose the threads on the end that sticks out the top of the tree.

I'm aware of what I might be facing with the front end.  I just don't like front fenders.  Been running my rigid with no fender for nine years.  I installed a fork brace on it when I swapped the front end last summer.  I haven't tried to ride it without the brace.  Too many other things going on and don't have time to mess with it.  If I have trouble with the CB750 I'll probably come up with some kind of brace.  I'm running shorter forks and the way these Cycle X trees are designed it looks like the tops of the tubes will end up being higher than factory.  Shorter folks should equal less flex...theoretically.  Thanks for the concern.

Cool yeah shorter forks will flex less, my forks are like +8 inches so more of an issue there haha.

cheers

Hey Bud...I ran my 550 w/no fender without a brace with no issues. I actually bought a brace but sold the bike before ever installing it.

I have a K3 that I plan to run fenderless but plan to install this brace...

Cool.  Don't you have to be really careful with that type of brace?  They mount on the tubes, right?  Too low and you loose travel, too high and you defeat the purpose.  The brace on my rigid attaches to the lower legs and curves over the tires.  It's really just an extremely short fender.

Yes the bolt-to-lowers type of fork brace is much much better, and you're right about the issues with upper-fork-mounted ones.

By the by, I really like the balance of black-to-shiny on that rigid, just the right proportions for them to set each other off.

Is that a hand-stitched seat?  looks nice.

Using an F2/3 lower front end, right? Or is someone finally making usable braces for the early 750Ks?

I do have an F frt end I plan to use.

A proper fork brace does not attach to the tubes, we call those tweak bars.  Were used on choppas with extended front ends.

Thanks.  Yes, I recovered the seat myself and did the stitching.  I'm going to do basically the same type of cover on the CB750 seat.

I feel like I got a lot done today.  The rear wheel is finally balanced and installed for what I hope is a very long time, at least until I need a new tire.  The rear suspension is pretty much all together.  I got the forks built and installed.  Also the oil tank is installed.

I should have a roller in two weeks.

Looks really shiny! That rear wheel/tire clearance against the subframe looks very tight to your new hoop  :-\ Have you had a chance to check it under full compression for rubbing???

No, I just pulled the shocks out of the box and installed them.  There's definitely some adjustments needed.  Just haven't gotten that far yet.

I just bought an engine.  '74 too, so it'll match the frame.  28,000 miles.  Can't wait to dig in.

I should have it in about a week.  I'll probably rebuild the top end no matter what.  At the very minimum I'll pull the head and the cylinders, probably have the head rebuilt...see what kind of condition the pistons and cylinders are in.  Paint and polish everything that needs it.  Probably get a new bolt kit, new starter, new clutch, electronic ignition, etc.

I have the carbs from the old engine.  They are in very good shape.  Just need a rebuild.

I'm not really looking to hot rod anything at this point.  A solid runner is all I really want right now.

If the new stock motor has no evidence of leaks and has good compression, why pull apart the top end at all?

Here's the thing about this rabbit hole, though:  once the top is off, you're only a few bolts away from being able to put in a new cam chain.

Yesterday I got in some new bolts for the rear shocks for mounting the shocks to the swing arm.  The ones that came with the shocks look cheap.  While I was messing with that I noticed the rear sprocket chain plate hits the base of the shock.  The new shocks have a much wider base than the stock shocks.  I can either remove the sprocket plate completely or I can machine the lip off it.  I actually kind of like the look of the plate.  I realize the plate is there to keep the chain from possibly wedging between the swing arm and the hub if it ever flies off, but is it essential?

Very true, but it's just a few bolts, and then you'd also have the opportunity to plastiguage your crank and rod bearings.

Oh and also replace those pesky seals at the right side crank and final drive shaft.  They're 40ish years old!

Plus you'd be able to clean out the grunge that accumulates below the transmission, that stuff never flushes all the way out of the sump.

AAaaand, inspect/replace your shift forks for smooth shifting.

Really, if you're going to take the motor most of the way apart anyway, why not go all the way?  ;)
