Had to make a clutch basket nut removal tool out of 21mm socket.  Worked great.

I've got the engine pretty much as torn down as I want to take it.  It looks like it's in really good shape.  Doesn't appear to have any extensive work done to it previously.  The no. 2 intake tappet adjustment screw appears to have been replaced at some point.  There was a tiny washer in the no. 2 cylinder, but it looks like it may have been dropped in there recently.  The engine didn't have spark plugs, carbs or an exhaust when I got it.  The no. 3 exhaust valve looks a little burnt compared to the rest.  Might have been running rich on that cylinder.  The Pistons look good.  I thought the engine looked untouched until I got to the cylinder base gasket.  There's some scrape marks and what looks like old gasket sealant on the case.  Other than that I don't think I can complain.

Looking good, that cam chain tensioner has seen some miles for sure.

Nice job on the clutch locknut tool.

How were the bores?

No scrapes, gouges, burning or cracks.  A little shiny, but a quick hone is all I think it needs.

Yep.  Black or dark charcoal grey cases (probably black) silver cylinders, black head and chrome covers.  I don't want to spend a lot of time polishing aluminum.

Thanks for your help yesterday.

I dug out the leftover hunk of cow that I used to cover the seat on my bobber and it looks like I have just enough to do the CB750 seat.

Working on the seat.  I got the pan painted and my foam arrived.  Still got some glueing and shaping to do.  Now that I've gotten this far with the seat it looks like I'm going to need some more leather.

Also, took the family to the art museum for a "Sculpted in Steel" exhibit.  Mostly Art Deco cars, but they had this cool old Henderson with the in line four.

Nice touch.

FYI - if you register as an antique vehicle, no need for annual inspection [and unsightly sticker]

To run the plate I'll have to register it as an antique or a classic.  I think you still have to have it inspected as a classic and you can ride it anywhere/anytime vs. limited use as an antique...which from what I have heard isn't really enforced.  They don't do the sticker anymore on anything.  It's all in the system.

It's def not enforced, but unless being used as a daily rider, you can always just say you are "testing" it or headed to a Rally.  I always register as an antique, the plate is good for 5 years [but prorated] and only $60.

Good to know, Steve.

On another note, I now have one rebuilt oil pump.

I've run into a little predicament.  The engine I bought was running an oil cooler and there's a threaded adapter mounted in the lower case.  The problem is the adapter has splines on it where it goes into the case.  I bought a chrome one piece oil filter with an adapter that screws into the case, but obviously I won't be able to use it if I can't get the other adapter out.  There's a second part to the oil cooler adapter that holds the oil cooler housing on that has a big nut on one end.  I don't know if I should try to get that oil cooler adapter out of the case with some vise grips or not.  I don't know how far the splines go into the case and how bad the threads are screwed up.  I wasn't planning on running an oil cooler.  I could plug the holes in the oil cooler housing and use the chrome oil filter I bought, but it's going to stick out an inch.  Anybody have any experience with an oil cooler adapter like this?

I panicked too soon.  I zoomed up on the photo I took and the splines looked shallow.  I was able to remove the adapter by tapping it with a screwdriver and a hammer on the edge of the ID.  It came out real easy.  I've never seen an adapter like that before.  The threads in the case look fine and the chrome oil filter will screw right on with no cooler housing.

Yeah, it's weird.  I was looking at some other oil coolers online and all of them had a one piece adapter that held the housing in place.   The splines had me worried.

I decided since I was this far along I might as well split the cases.  My engine stand brackets worked great for flipping the engine over.  A few blocks of wood to support it and it's sitting just right.  Everything looks pretty good in there.

I should have my cylinders and head back on Wednesday.  I sent them out to be rebuilt.  The cylinders needed to be bored so that means new 1 over pistons.  I'm getting a new primary chain tensioner too.

Also been working on shaping the seat foam.  Gonna try and work on that some more tomorrow.

Looking good, glad you decided to go the rest of the way!   ;D

Motor stand adapter works well indeed.  Sell a few sets to fund you build!  8)  Looks like when the engine is flipped like that, it ends up at a nice height for working on while standing.

Your internals look to be in good shape from what shows in the pics.  Sludge isn't even all that bad.

Yeah, it's pretty clean.  Just a thin layer of grime inside the cases for the most part.  There was some thick stuff in the oil pan, but it's gone now.

With the cases spilt and up side down the work height on the stand is just about perfect for me while standing.  I'm 6' tall.  With the engine in normal position I sit on a stool I'm good.  The height is adjustable though.
