Water in my 81 650 front brake system?
« on: October 01, 2006, 10:07:27 AM »
Hello all. We had some rainy weather here in the south lately, and i have a suspicion that my brake fluid reservoir is no longer water tight. So that means that water has probably gotten into my brake system. The brake lever is very tight and the braking action just doesn't feel the same... not to mention the plastic went from being somewhat cloudy to impossible to see through in a couple of days.

So here are my questions: If indeed water has gotten into my system do I need to replace the whole thing, or can i just get a new reservoir and bleed out the system?  Also, what is a fair price for a good condition used braking system?

Any input is much appreciated.

Thanks!

I’d get it fixed ASAP before things start to rust and things get stuck.

Bleed the system and get a new gasket for the MC ASAP.  You should be able to see any cracks in the gasket that has failed.  You may also want to see of the piston seal is leaking and allowing water to enter under braking.
