I need input choosing wheels and tires for my build
« on: September 13, 2014, 05:53:01 am »
Ok, I have pretty much decided on the changes I would like to make to my '76 CB750 F, but have seen a number of different builds on this forum and am now looking for input on my choice of wheel/tire combination.

I have either bought or have bookmarked and set aside the budget for the parts to effect the following general changes:

GSXR 600 front forks...complete with rotors, clip-ons, calipers, with a Cognito moto adjustable triple tree
Rear suspension will be updated but maintain stock shock length.
Engine mods probably to 915cc with associated carb kit.

I was planning on fitting laced wheels as follows 3.25 x 17 front with a 120/70 tire and 4.25 x 17 rear with a 160/60 tire.

Problem is I have been reading a lot of projects on this forum and have seen a few guys fit standard diameter rims with slightly wider that standard tires which look great - but they have had standard front suspension.

The other problem is I haven't been able to see any bikes which have the GSXR front end with the 17 inch wheels and wider tires that I was originally planning.

And I am now thinking 3.25 x 19 front with a 120/70 tire and 4.25 x 18 rear with a 160/60 tire.

Is there anyone out there who has fitted GSXR front and standard rear suspension with 17 rims and matching tires and have photos that I can see a finished result.

Or anyone who has done the same front end conversion with the 19" front rim and 18" rear rim (which is what I am leaning towards now).

I know this is a matter if taste and the adjustable triple will obviate any handling argument by keeping trail within the factory engineered bounds....and the quality of available rubber being very high either way I go. I also know the 17" option will lower ride height, but I'm not planning to do any scratching with this bike.

And it would be great to see a whole bunch of photos of all the great bikes you guys have built.

Please, if you post photos can you kindly note the size of rims and tires fitted.

Cheers and thanks heaps for any advice or direction.

Pete

Pete - Devin's site (Cognito Moto) has both his 550 and 750 with those same tire sizes (17") front and rear with his hub and GSXR front ends.

Read the article on Cyclex's site about their CB750F race bike, It ran 17's and was scary fast too.... ;D ;)  Actually, CycleX have a really nice alloy rear disc brake hub, they sell the wheels complete i think, I'll go get the link and post it here... ;)

I noticed your 550 project wears 16" rear and 19"front and I like the chunky look it gives......bloody hell...anothet option in the mix.....

Ruth be told, that's how the bike came to me and at the onset, I was quite budget oriented and refused to buy new rims. Funny, looking back, how many little decisions were made only to be abandoned later.

I'd personally prefer a 19/17 or 18/17 in that bike. I've got heaps of clearance under the tail, and the 19/16 makes the front just ever so twitchy at higher cornering speeds. One day I'll swap them off to Sun alloys... Other bikes to finish first.

Thanks for the direction Retro.

Not had much luck with the Cycle X people. After a few emails asking questions about other things....no time wasting...actual product purchase questions, I haven't received a single reply. I'll be starting a thread about where to source equivalent parts specifically excluding Cycle X as a source for anything.

I exchanged quite few emails with CycleX concerning valve train components and the reply was always the same day - I just checked in my mail box.

Your experience may be different, but generally CycleX is good vendor to deal with.

Their spam filter may be getting your emails mate, they also have an ebay shop, maybe try asking questions through that..

Thanks again Retro.....maybe it is their spam. Benefit of the doubt.

And the eBay route is a great suggestion. I'll give it a try.

Thanks again.
