Side Covers Again
« on: May 22, 2005, 09:05:55 AM »
Im a little unclear about all these repro side covers for cb750.  First, does Honda still carry these?  Also, i looked at a couple like David Silver and these look very close, have the indent in and im sure would look good painted.  The ones at JC Whitney dont look very authentic, my bike actually came with one of those on it.  So,  where is the best place to buy the best repro or original in the US.  I also need to get new emblems, which look like the old covers will cost about $100 bucks in emblems.  Any suggestons very helpful as my bike is going to the painter as soon as I can get these.

Also, if David Silver has them for $30EUD and CMSNL has them for $55EUD has anyone seen the two side by side.  Are they roughly the same?

well I got the "cheap" covers and with a little fitting and good painting, they look just fine. Unless you are doing a showbike, repros are fine. Otherwise you may want to see if you can get a set and make a mold and make new ones. No matter how good of shape the original covers are in, they will break sooner or later. If you mold new ones, you will have guys on this site lined up!

What "cheap" ones did you get.  I can't believe someone hasn't come up with a solid fiberglass replica of those things.  I imagine Honda wouldn't appreciate it if you starting selling knockoffs

I got a pair from Dennis Kirk a few years ago and they are OK. They are made by a company called Maier. They are plastic and you can paint them with the rattle can or take them to the body shop...whatever. Mine were $20 each but I see they have gone up to $26 each for a K model.

I think you will find that Dave Silver and CMS both buy from the same source. I have bought 750F2 and 500 four and both were of outstanding quality and of a material more flexible than the original so they shouldnt fracture BUT they do need proper care and preparation for painting

Here's a non US site selling CB emblems. They do look nice, but I can't say anything about their quality.
