CB400F front hub rebuild/missing spacer
« on: September 19, 2014, 09:02:28 PM »
Hey guys!

i'm in the process of finishing my bikes frame as a roller, I'm going to paint the hubs and the spokes, but I'm also changing the seal and what not.

Well today I took apart my front hub and it turns out I'm missing a spacer or bushing, I'm not sure what it is.

It's the part labeled as 178.

Does any one of you have pictures of it and measurements for it?
I'm planning on machining a new piece so all that would be very very helpful. Also what material should I use for the part? Thanks in advanced. Hope to be posting pics of the roller frame soon.

What's the history of this blke? There is just no possibility that it could work without the spacer. The axle nut compresses a stack of spacers and bearings and none can be skipped. That particular spacer/bushing also seals against crap getting into the bearing (via seal #397).
I went to find a hub assembly I have in a box to get you a pic but the disarray in the shed was too daunting. It's just a short thick walled steel tube that will have a shiny ring where the seal touches it.

Well I bought the bike about 2 years ago, and have been going at restoring it intermittently for a while now.
The PO had it somewhat running when I got it but there where a lot of bugs and gremlins on it so i bit the bullet and took it apart.

On the spacer part, the hub didn't have yesterday I took it apart. The wheel ran kinda askew, but I thought it was just alignment issues with the fork clamps. I really had no idea it was missing, and yes, like you mentioned the inside of the hub was full a grime and other things.  I actually rode the bike a few hundred kilometers  like that.

so if you could post pictures of it that it would be wonderful! Thanks a lot.

The way it should look:

The bushing:

Dimensions:

I would make it out of some type of stainless steel, probably 304, to avoid corrosion. I don't know what the OEM part is made of, it is magnetic.
