CB650 Wheel Swap ?
« on: September 30, 2006, 09:53:17 AM »
Howdy all, first post.  Great forum you got here.

I have a 1980 CB650 with wire wheels and tubed tires. I wanted to get to a tubeless tire. I have two options

1. Send the wheels to get trued and sealed for a cost of around $100-$150 a wheel

2. Pick up a set of Comstar's on Ebay, average price $50-$75 a wheel.

Has anyone done this swap? Since the Comstars have twin disks, and my setup has single, is it a problem to just leave off a disk and mount without it? Or would i need to swap forks out to a twin disk model to get the right fit? I've considered changing the fork anyway, as i need to put new springs and oil in my current forks anyway, and if lucky you can find a good deal on forks on ebay every now and then.

Thanks for any advice you  can offer.

I also have an 80 model that originally had spoke rims.  I got a PAIR OF COMSTARS on it now with a single caliper.  Comstar rims came with both single and double calipers.  I got my rims from a cb750 single caliper bike and bolted them up with no problems.  Hope this helps you.

The North American model '79 650 has Comstars with a single disc up front. Maybe that would work....? See my avatar.

Is your front a single disk or dual disk?

Why not just run tubes?    If you do switch to comstars the dual disk ones will work BUT the little cover that goes over the non disk side wont bolt on.  The hub/rivets are positioned wrong.

nate... got your pm... yes, this one is single disc... i was thinking that you could use the wheel for either single or dual discs, but according to CB650, it wont work--- i had never actually tried myself, though the thought had crossed my mind... i had originally bought these to fork with a 750C--- putting 17" on rear with a disc brake (also have swingarm, brake arm, m/c, caliper, and lever from 900F)... that bike now needs head work, so it is parked in the corner awaiting my next manic episode...

I want to switch to tubeless for a couple of reasons.

1. A puncture in a tubed tire can sometimes lead to rapid deflation, not a fun time at speed

2. Tubeless can be plugged if you catch a nail in the tread. I know a lot of people are against this, but after speaking to a friend in Korea, throwing a tire away with just a nail hole is blasphemy. Plugs in moto tires are more common than in car tires. I don't do any super high speed riding anyway.

@CB650:  SO are you saying the single disk model that CBer has won't work? He has a single disk modell. Or were you just commenting on the dual disk models not working?

THanks for your help cb650

The dual disk wheel will work but you have to drill new holes in the little cover that is on the nondisk side or leave it off.   I had a near new tire on a dual disk front (bike wasnt running) and nite before a weekend ride decided better swap to my other bike with the single disk.   That little cover is the only problem.   The way the hub is riveted to the "spokes" is diff.  It will fit other than that cover.

I know it sounds weird but when you have them side by side it makes sence.  Why they did that is beyond me.

does seem odd. You would think it would have been more cost effective to make them interchangeable.

They are just not that little cover.   Hub is "clocked" diff so the reliefs in the cover for the rivets dont line up.    Like I said I did the swap just drilled extra holes in the cover.

Sounds simple enough, but i know just enough to be dangerous!  ;D  I'm going to try to locate a single disc model to avoid having to take the drill to anything.  But just incase, if you ever have the wheel off the bike could you take a couple of pics?

Thanks

You could run without the cover.  Just dont look as clean.  Same cover as your spokes has I believe.

And they look really spiffy when they are all silver and shiny. See Ibsens avatar.

I'm going to strip the black off mine this winter.

What did they come off of?   Is that rotor for the rear?

european models got alloy ' reverse spoke' comstars around 1980. They lookm like CB750/900 dohc or maybe the custom 650? What size is the rear?
The brake rotor is a late model, 84 ish

Well that rotor looks like it bolts on to the rear.  Its not a 650 front rotor.  No 650 came with a rear disk.  Front looks like mine.
If you look at the front see the holes for the disk are "between" the rivits.  On a single disk comstar the holes are right next to the rivits.

the rear is from an 82-83 CB900F, and the front is from an '81 750F... the rotor looks different because its companion caliper is a dual-piston...

I undersdand the dual pistons after 82 but look at how it mounts.   Looks like it bolts to the rear not the front.

Are you sure about the rotor? The larger hole and wider bolt pattern does make it look
like the rear rotor. You might have put it down without realizing it.

Talking to CBer about these wheels brought up an interesting question. This set of wheels was set up with a discs front and rear. I have disc up front so the front will work, but i have drum on the rear. Will my drum brake unit bolt up to this disc wheel? Or will I need to find a Comstar that originally had drum brakes on the rear? Or was this ever an available combo?

The 650 with Comstars had the drum brake and you're either going to have to get a wheel with a drum brake or go through the process of adapting the rear disc brake to your bike (could be quite involved) The wheels I have are like yours except that mine are off of a 650 and therefore has a drum brake in the rear. I plan on using mine though. Good luck.  Later on, Bill
