Careful before you paint yout tank
« on: December 23, 2008, 11:49:52 PM »
My wife has bees saying for weeks now  I can smell petrol, does your bike have a leak?
I replaced all the fuel lines,  pulled the carbs apart and cleaned them  thoroughly, but it was still  I can smell petrol.

Today i figured i would tune the bike and balance the carbs, reached under the tank to adjust one of the carbs and the back of my hand was covered in petrol with a sheet of expensive two pack paint.
I sandblasted the bottom half of the tank before i prepped it for paint, no holes i could find, looked like a real beauty.
Clearly i missed a few baby pinholes and they had leaked fuel between the tank and the paint forming a balloon full of fuel.

So make sure you are especially carefull in checking your tank before you paint it....
I might be able to get away without an expensive respray as 90 percent of the bubbled paint is on the underside of the tank and not visible but it could have been a lot worse.

A good thing to think of for future reference, if you have too hard of an abrasive in the blaster you can cheat a little and add a pressure regulator and simply turn down the air pressure so you don't have as much of a chance of blowing thru. I do this for the aluminum I blast, mainly because the blast cabinet at work has heavier media than what I want to use and its way too big just to change out the media.....
How you gonna fix it? Take the tank and get the holes braised?

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine who used the muriactic acid method of removing rust from inside of the tank,  he obviously didnt dilute it enough and after he put gas back in it there were a bunch of tiny pinhole leaks

The POR-15 kit will seal small pinholes.

I recommend a product by a company called caswell, I used their tank liner and had very good results.
