Slushy, sentimental stuff....
« on: September 30, 2006, 10:24:05 AM »
I just received this email 'pass it on' from my niece. Before deleting it I got to thinking that it actually applies to the mindset we've all got about our old bikes. so, if you'll excuse the slushy sentimentality, I give you....

I grew up in the 60's /70 's with practical parents. A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a name for it.... A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones.

Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Mum in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, and dish-towel in the other.

It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more.

But then my mother died, and on that clear winter's morning, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more. Sometimes, what we care about most, gets all used up and goes away never to return. So while we have it, it's best we love it and care for it and fix it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick.

This is true. for marriage..... and old cars.... and  children with bad report cards..... and dogs with bad hips.... and aging parents..... and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep.

I learned early in life not to get the sniffles around my Grammie.  She'd dig out that "recycled" tissue from the bottom of her purse to wipe my nose with that had probably been used to wipe my mother's nose when she was a kid!

I miss her... :'(

She was definitely a product of growing up during the depression in the dust bowl.  I take after her for sure, but I'm not quite that thrifty! ;)

On a serious note. If all of the members of this forum (and their families) made a conscious effort to reduce/re-use/recycle, think of the raw materials and landfill space that could be saved....

We are set to get five rubbish bins at each house in my city (UK) each will have a different colour, from garden waste to plastic it all has to be sorted and put in the correct bin, or we get a fine. I think it’s a good move, some people are not happy!

Oh man, that brings back memories!!!  My grandfather- we all called him "Pops", used to dream up new ways to save money- I guess growing up in the Great Depression did that to folks.  I remember when I was little he'd tell us stuff when he thought of it- sometimes at inappropriate times.  He once told us that when we went #2, it was very efficient to only use one square of toilet paper!  HAHAHAHA  He's still with us- a little senile now, but not bad for 91 years old!  Hope I make it that long!

He would take care of anything he bought meticulously..  When my grandparents moved to an assisted living facility a few years ago, they gave me some old camping gear they had.  Among other things, I got a Coleman lantern with a build date of 1964 on it, in the original box, perfect working order!!  Everything he owned was maintained to the same standard.  I strive to live my life to that same standard.  It's a good standard (well, I still have my doubts about the toilet paper part!)  ;)

You can actually get away with using a 2" square of paper, such as an old bus ticket. Unfortunately I am away from home and do not have my camera, so I cannot demonstrate...

I didn't mean actually demonstrate. That's private stuff. I meant show a person how to construct a 2" square pooper scooper.

Works as long as you do not try and use it upwards.
