Hi all,
I haven't needed to really ask much so far - the resources here are phenomenal.  So many of my potential questions have already been answered...  But I thought I'd at least "pay" for all the knowledge I'm sucking up by giving you all some pictures. :)

So here's the story:
An ad on my local Craigslist popped up for "2 1970? Honda 500" with little other information.  Upon talking to the guy, he told me he'd inherited the bikes from his father who passed away 10 years ago.  His father had them for a long time before that, having brought them home from who knows where.  The seller knew little else about them.  After I went to look at them, I found them to be 1972 CB500s, both remarkably original/complete.  They'd been neglected for a long time, so they have rust and much, if not all, of the chrome is pretty much shot, but he only wanted $300 apiece.  So, with keys to one bike, and titles for neither, I bought them both.  Here they are loaded into my truck for the trip to their new home:


The tanks, seats, and sidecovers are all intact, and each bike shows only about 3000 total miles on the odometer.  One tank has a failing liner, the other has some light rust.  Neither throttle will move at all.  One has no front caliper at all.  One broken front mirror.  Otherwise, I can see nothing else major (or minor) they are missing.  They both kick over fine.  I figure $600 for the pair is a steal.

After some extensive garage rearranging, I get them tucked in and immediately start in on the one that has the front caliper (and that I have a key for) while I order a key for the second bike and get the title application paperwork started.  I can't believe this bike still even has the entire original tool kit. 



Taking the rack of carbs off is no joke!  My other bikes to date are a little kz250, and a Kawasaki 400 triple - nothing that has linked carbs like these.  I finally get the carbs out:



A little [c]rusty, but still promisingly complete and unmolested. Slides are frozen in place, though, so they had to come off the rack so I could really get the cleaned up.  they were pretty badly gummed up.




But carb dip, lemon juice boil, and carb spray working together, and I was able to get them satisfactorily clean and get the slides moving again.  New o-ring kits went in, and all the old brass was removed, cleaned up, and reused.  This next picture makes them look better than they do in real life.  :)  They look fine now, but not as shiny as all this....


I also rebuilt the equally gunked up petcock, and de-rusted the gas tank.

Would you believe that was all it took?  I was able to jump-start the bike after that.  Sure, it was only running on two cylinders, but I just cleaned up the points with a little emery cloth, and had all four cylinders.  Now, I have good reason to believe these bikes haven't been run in 34 years:

And I hadn't so much as changed the oil or plugs, but the damned thing ran anyhow.

Obviously I shut the bike down after a couple seconds.  Then I got on with changing the oil, and plugs, and putting the stock airbox all back together.  It runs very nicely now.  I'm still going to pull the tank back off one more time - I'm leaking gas out of [at least] one of the overflows, and I just picked up my angled valve feeler gauges today, so I can get on with the rest of the 3000 mile service.  But I am amazed at this bike already...

I just wish it didn't need so much cleaning!  And that the chrome were more salvageable.  A couple of the exhaust pipes are rusted through in spots - I should have enough to make one complete set, though, at least.  The handlebars are junk at this point - the chrome is flaking off from rust.  The front brake doesn't offer any resistance - but a new master cylinder rebuild kit is on its way, so hopefully I can fix that this weekend.  Other than that, I need titles.  Indiana has been good to me for titles for my other two bikes, but so far these two are not looking as good.  I somehow got the only person in Indiana's new "Central BMV Title Processing" office who has couldn't buy a clue if she won the lottery. 
First she told me my VIN was too short and she needed the 17-digit VIN.  Now she tells me that since the frame and engine numbers don't match, these need to count as "built/assembled" bikes, and go through a VIN application process.   ::)  Yes. I built these cb500s myself.  Nevermind that that are bone stock.

Anyhow, I've talked long enough.  Here are a couple more pictures.












Thank you to everyone who has unwittingly already helped me, to the few folks who wittingly helped convince me to go for these, and for all of the help I'm sure to keep getting as I sponge up knowledge from this forum!  Great bunch of folks here!

Wow Great bikes man, I have had bad experiences with a 500, but yours look great!  600$ seems fair to me!

I was kinda hoping someone here would tell me if those were possibly a dealer option, or early aftermarket. They seem to function as extra high brand. They turn on automatically along with the high beam, at least...

Those extra lights and the handlebars are not stock, they're aftermarket. As are the highway bars.

Your engine serial and frame serials never matched from the factory. They were constructed in separate locations and mated elsewhere in Japan. Not that Ms Clueless would understand anyway....

I already took the highway bars off one of them - it was unreasonably complicating getting the filter housing off.  I may keep the extra lights, at least on one of the bikes.  I kinda like them, and while they may not be "original" they are at least "period,"  and anything that makes me more visible without being ludicrous is a plus in my book - as long as the electrical system can handle it.

I didn't realize the handlebars weren't stock though - how can you tell?

I tried to explain the engine/frame numbers thing to the BMV gal, but I don't know if I got through.  She's going to talk to her superiors again and get back to me.  Here's hoping!

Well they look awfully tall in the pictures to me. Could be the picture... The extra lights may well cause some charging issues if you run them while the bike is at low RPMs. These bikes have a very anemic charging system to begin with, thus added electrical draw like headlights, driving lights, etc significantly impact the recharge rates.

Okay folks, I need some help.  I need to prove to the BMV that the engine and frame numbers never matched on these bikes.  They want something semi-official from Honda that says this.  Anyone have any clues where I could get something like that?  Ever seen it documented outside of forums and tribal knowledge? 

Any help or clues would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I'd found that...  I assume this is based on some document from Honda.  Possibly that original document this was based on might work, but the BMV people are telling me they want something that explicitly says that the frame and engine #s didn't match from the factory.   ???

The customer service person I got at American Honda was an amazingly good sport about this.  She was as stunned as I was that the BMV wouldn't know this already, and sent me a page from her model identification guide (same info as here: http://www.sohc4.net/cb500-model-guide/ but slightly more official looking, and without the typos claiming that the K1 and K2 had Frame numbers with E in them, and engine numbers without) along with her contact info, and is going to look into getting a letter sent to me that more explicitly says the magic words that the BMV wants to hear.

Obviously, if such a letter results from this, I'll scan it and get it posted somewhere in case anyone else ever needs to prove such an inane point.

The seller did say he talked to a couple other people, but nobody else showed up - I can't blame you for not digging deeper after a phone exchange - the guy really didn't come across very well on the phone, and clearly knew next to nothing about the bikes.  He turned out to be a friendly, chatty guy, but his lack of knowledge and unprovable "origin story" for where the bikes came from were not super confidence-inspiring.  The only reason I followed up with him was that it was only a 40-minute drive from me and I figured it wouldn't hurt.  I had no idea they'd be in such good shape, overall.  :o

In a way, that's reassuring.  I am fine with the geometry of these bars, but I felt bad they had been so thoroughly trashed by time.  Now that I know they weren't original to begin with, I won't have any qualms about replacing them with other non-original bars when the time comes.

Got pics of your S3? What shape is she in?  I have a Z1 and am shopping for an H1.

I got the S3 about a year ago, as my first ever bike.  She was dirt cheap, and I wanted a bike to fix so I could learn about bikes.  Hell, at the time, I didn't even really understand that being a two-stroke made her different from 95% of the street bikes out there.  People say you should get a running bike for your first, but those people clearly do not understand how inquisitive and cheap I am.  She was nowhere near running, but mostly complete when I got her.  Seemed like at some point she'd been carefully (re)assembled by someone who made a lot of wrong guesses about how things (especially wires) were supposed to go.  So I fixed her up while I learned and last winter.  I haven't done anything I'd call "restoring" to her, so she's not in perfect cosmetic condition or anything, but she's just about perfect mechanically now, and absolutely perfect for flogging around on, which is what she's for. :)

Now that you ask, I've got lots of pictures of pieces of her, but very few of her assembled.  I rode her to work today, maybe I'll try to get a couple shots while there's some good sun. to show her off a little better.  This is about the only picture I've got that shows what she looks like currently:

I did take a somewhat nicer pic the other day, or at least a brighter one. :)



The Kaw is a really fun little ride, but I'm very excited about the CB500 - other than the motorcycle safety class, all of my riding experience has been on the triple, so I'm anxious to learn what a smooth ride feels like!  ;D

in CB500 news, I've spent the last 3 days rebuilding one master cylinder.  Late last night, after hours of poking, grabbing, and prodding with every tool I could think of, I came back to this forum to look for other tips on how to remove that @#$%$# circlip.  Many suggestions were found, but mostly it seems to come down to a combination of smarts, luck, and perseverance.    So I threw some more perseverance at it, gently clamped it into a bench vice, went at it with my picks, and viola!  Out it came.  I don't think anyone by the people on this board who have rebuilt one of those can understand how happy that tiny victory made me. 

Finished cleaning up the master cylinder this morning, and put it all back together with a new kit (obviously).  I'd been prepared for a fight with the bleeder, so I'd been soaking it with PB every time I thought of it for the past few days.  When I went to turn it today, imagine my surprise when it turned and came loose almost without any fuss!

Sadly, it didn't "open".  It unscrewed, but didn't seem to be allowing fluid to pass.  So I took it off entirely, and squeezed the brake lever.  The lever is fairly firm - there's clearly pressure - but no fluid comes out of the bleeder hole.  So I'm guessing this means I'm in for a caliper rebuild, next.

The S3 looks good,  I have H1 fever bad, selling my CB550 to buy one.

Yes, those masters can be a #$%* to rebuild.  Calipes, on the other hand, are much simpler.  Sometimes, a good cleaning is all they need, as long as the piston isnt badly pitted. Odd that no fluid comes out with the bleeder screw out.
