Hello all.
Is there any specific tool for the front wheel retainer? I'm referring to this:

Hammer & screwdriver... The flat one, not the pointy one that looks like a cross...  :D

Hey that's what all the POs did...  ::)

Gotta get me one of those tools...

But you must remember to drill out the stakes first or the tool will be of little use.

BTW- many of us have made bearing retainer tools.  A flat strap of steel 1" wide, 24" long +/-. Near the center drill 2 holes spaced to match 2 retainer notches. Put a small, short bolt in each hole, secured by a nut with a few threads of the bolts sticking out.. Mesh the 2 bolts into the retainer, turn the strap piece of cake.

I would suggest you do a search and you will find a lot of homemade tools and tips. Many with pictures. Don;t use a screwdriver.

Yes be sure to drill the 4 staked punch marks, just deep enough to remove them.

I used this, just a piece of steel filed to shape and shoved onto a handle.

Because the hub is not laced yet I put it in the oven to make the bearings easier to remove.

I tightened it up with the same tool, and it has gone past the original position a little, then re-stake the retainer with a punch.

Is it really necessary to restake them? How is that going to come undone?

If it goes in smoothly, and you don't crank it into place, heat cycles could loosen it. I don't think it should be cranked down hard, just snug, so a couple taps with a centerpunch can't hurt.
