timing the valves on rebuild
« on: September 28, 2014, 08:23:46 AM »
Hi

engine is 74 cb750 and ive just finished installing the camshaft and rocker arms

i just want to verify a couple things, to be sure.

on the cam shaft, the index key notch is at top, the dash lines are aligned in parallel with the cam shaft holders.  the "T" 1-4 mark is aligned with index mark.
this puts 1 and 4 pistons at tdc.

the cam shaft lobes on piston #1, (which is at the generator side? - see how much experience i have), are in the overlap position, (cam lobes point up) and both the in and ex valves are slightly cracked open. (i can see a bit of light through both valves)

the cam lobe base circles on piston #4 (clutch side) are pointed up, and valves are both closed. (cant see light)

as far as i can tell, i have it exactly the way the manual reads and seems to match the pictures.  figures 3.40, 3.41

basically just trying to get some confirmation so i can proceed with more confidence.

This is correct. You can also have the index line pointed down, that's the same. Some engines' cams just have a horizontal line that's positioned parallel to the gasket surface, no preference for which way is up.
