re sleeving jugs
« on: September 30, 2006, 06:44:10 PM »
I have finished dismantling my spare motor and it is in superb condition internally but a mess externally. So.. I'm looking at swapping the good sleeves into my good barrell. Has anyone tried doing this themselves, ie heating barrlls in an oven and dropping the sleeves out etc. any pitfalls or oh no don't try it

About 400 degrees...then press them out. That's what I've found

I have done this procedure on a 550 cylinder block to  and it really is simple. Pre-heat oven to 400+ degrees, use steel or aluminum blocks to hold inverted cylinder block off the oven grate and when temp is right you will hear them fall through. You don't have to have the block high enough for the liners to come completely out a good 2-3" is good. Just wait till all liners are released before moving block and if possible have help when you do as liner may come out abruptly damaging oven or glass on door......

I will add a warning to anyone trying this, the first thing to happen is the old oil etc burns and sets off the smoke alarm

I think this myth is busted. Or my old oven is not up to the task. It has however given me a taste for alcohol which I might have to persue by going to the pub and let the stench in the house subside a bit.

mrbreeze, the liners remained "insitu" the original Honda black paint has turned into a rather interesting motled brown colour and I think I shall be dining out tonight due to unforseen nasty smells permuating the oven and house in general. I have taken the liberty of phoning a friend who is prepared to join me at our local to discuss further proceedings  ;D

71cb750, I'm glad to help...
seaweb11 can I use yours ?
well, the beer tasted good. After much discussion with some friends about my problem it was ascertained that my old oven will not reach the critical temperature needed. I was unable to convince anyone to allow me to try my wee experiment in their oven, the selfish pricks  ;D  don't they realise this is on the cutting edge of science and they could have been part of it.

400 degrees should be plenty hot enough although I have used 'cleaning cycle which ges up to about 550deg f ;D
Did you remove the 'o' rings in the cylinder base before you started? (and the gasket)
I dont bother to pre heat, just stand cylinders on a baking tray and wait until the block drops off the liners. pair of welding gloves and pull liners out of block.
If you do both blocks at the same time is a good idea to
 1. mark positions before you start
 2. let liners cool down before you re-fit them to hot block
I have a 400F block I'm going to be working on in next few weeks, liners are out, not sure whats going back in yet :-\, got some 550 pistons but no liners :(

I take it you're a single man Scunny, (oh wait a minute, you're a Kiwi, sorry I forgot ;D) I've been banned from the kitchen after she came home early and caught me using the dishwasher to degrease some engine cases.

Bloody unreasonable decision in my book, so I'm looking around for an oven and a dishwasher that I can set up in my garage for just these kinds of situations! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
