I'd like to find a pr. of small,mid-quality 18" tires...
« on: September 28, 2014, 10:53:26 PM »
I've got a little CB125S that I swapped an 18" rim onto in the rear.
I'm looking for a pr. of somewhat decent tires for it but not Michelin # M62 Gazelles(way too heavy for this little bike) but something more along the type as IRC NR21 style tires only they don't make a 2.75 x 18" that's the stock(& largest that could be used for the 1.40 x 18" fr. rim) size for the front.
The bike comes w/ a 1.60 x 17" rear rim which I raised to a 1.85 x 18" alloy rear along w/ 10 ga. spokes to lighten up the weight of the wheel.I still want to use the similar stock width on the Rr., a 3.00 x 18". I can also use a 80/90 x 18" fr. & a 90/90 x 18" Rr. metric size tires if I can only find some... Very tough to find any  ::)
I'd like to keep it as close to stock width tires as I can because this little 125 is quite agile & nimble and I don't want to take anything away from that part of the handling equation; 'flickable' is what I like  8)

Hi Larry,
I put on a pr. of Duro's a few years ago on my CB350 and found they weren't molded right or whatever because they both caused a speed wobble so I changed them out to IRC GS11's and I like the mold quality of them(3.00 x 18 fr. & 3.50 x 18" Rr.),they run straight and true.I bought that pr. of Duro's off of ebay & that's the only time I ever owned them.
What's your experience been with Duro tires ?

Avon list a AM26 universal (front or rear) 90/90-18, and a AM9 universal 80/90-18. If it helps. :)

I had a set on a 400 four without any problem.   Avons sure are better but I don't think they fit the mid quality price range

I'm sure I've had Sava fitted to one of my cars in the past, but not on a bike so can't really tell you if they're any good. Go for the Avons, go on, you know you want to! ;) ;D

Why not the IRC's?

The NR21's?  I'd like to use the 3.00x18 on the rear for sure and then find another one for the front because they don't make the 2.75x18  IRC NR21
I really like the NR21's,they're a good all-around tire

The '73 RD is great, not really doing a resto, it's a surviver.  Am in process of installing new tires, dust and fork seals.  Fun bike to ride!

Stev-o, Those stock size replacement tires will make a whole new(to you)bike out of that RD for you ! She'll be as nimble as can be  ;D and you'll be runnin' rings around some of your local buddies on Harley's and(gulp) CB750's. I'm still offering to come set the timing for you(2.00mm BTDC) whenever you want for borrowing it for the day  ::) ;D

Come on down, the good riding season has just begun!   Doubt this bike would "run rings" around any 750's, but would be fun to try.
The RD gets more comments from people than any of my other bike, except the Z1.

Stev-o, By saying "running rings around",I meant in the light and nimble handling you'll have once you replace those 'fat' tires on there w/ the smaller(closer to stock)size new ones along w/ the front suspension work you're doing;try running w/ a CB750 after you do that work to it on some real 'twisties'. The CB750 rider will be scraping a Lot of metal to try and catch up w/ you. I used to take mine up to the dragstrip and I would turn times in the high 14's(which was right in there with-in a 1/4 second of the stock CB750/4's at that time)if i launched correctly. The clutch was too grabby and it would want to endo rather than holeshot.I had to slip the s*%& out of that clutch to achieve a decent launch

Sounds like you had some fun with it!    My RD had proper size tires on it, so not expecting a huge difference.
