Ron, so you plan on repainting the tank yourselves?

That's the plan.  Logan will attempt to paint it on his own so we'll see how it comes out.  Worst case, we have the 2nd tank and I can take it to have it professionally done but my preference would be for him to paint it so that he can say that he had a hand in every part of the restoration.

We just still can't decide on the color.  The top choices so far are Candy Ruby Red and Candy Gold.  I've been leaning towards getting the bike to look similar to this one in the photo below all along.  But Logan points out that the titanium blue tint to the engine may or may not go well with the red.  Personally I think it will but he and I are both Georgia Tech fans so the Candy Gold has a certain appeal to both of us. :)  But that leads to the issue of decals.  The 2 set of decals for the 78 bikes...I'm not sure either of those will look very good with the Gold color; whereas, you can see the bike below is using the ones designed to go on the Candy Alpha Red (a color I don't care for myself....too much like burgundy) and they work well.

Ron, I think Logan has a point about the titanium paint clashing. I also happen to be a big fan of the candy gold! Although you know up here, Big Orange is the only color I really see.

Nate, I don't disagree about the gold color but I think it needs the black stripes to really look good.  I do happen to know a guy with a custom decal business.  I may see if I can mock up some black stripes that match the pattern of the Honda ones and get him to make them up for me if we end up going with the gold.

The link isn't showing for me, martin but I'd love to see that photo.

Nate,
I was just looking back through the thread looking for a specific photo and I saw a comment you made several pages back about your headers having rust on them.  When I bought the bike, it had 4 into 2's on the bike and the two mufflers are toast but the headers aren't bad.  You'd probably have to heat them up pretty good to get the mufflers off of them.  But you're welcome to them if you want them.  If you do, just shoot me a PM with your address and I'll mail them out to you this week.

Logan and I are trying to freshen up the paint on the controls of the bike but the problem we are facing is how do we paint the black without messing up the red writing?  We have an idea on how to accomplish this but I would appreciate hearing how others have done this.

I wish I had the skill to do that neatly. I had mine done in PC by Marc. He's doing the K3 set now, and TBH, paint vs PC is no contest on the controls  ;D

Strip them completely, paint them black, then re-do the red paint as follows:

Thin your paint out a little, fill in the lettering, then use a smooth cloth to wipe away the excess, leaving behind the paint in the lettering.

Pretty sure the control units were originally anodized btw.

Yep. I went with PC just for a more permanent solution. Anodizing will eventually fade, at least from what I've been told...

All I did was show Marc a pic of how the OEs looked, and he did his magic. I had NO CLUE he was gonna do the lettering, was a pretty sweet surprise, can't wait for my K3 ones to come back!

I just used Simoniz/Holts Tough Black Satin, no primer or undercoat required, not sure if available in US?

It does mean you dont need to fully strip and is not original, but is a compromise I can live with ;)

I'm having a bit of an issue with the K3 controls as the lettering is not as deep making "wiping" difficult.

Thanks for the all the help, guys.

Mark, I'm definitely interested in your service.  Time is becoming somewhat of an issue for us though because we're trying to do the initial startup this week.  Since Logan has a presentation coming up in a month, we need to  get that going ASAP.

I know you're not too far away from me (I think you're in Gainesville...and I'm in Woodstock) so what may happen is that we may get the bike running with us painting it and after his presentation, I might end up sending the controls to you for powdercoating.

Ron,

Don
No, he doesn't compete against others.  He presents in front of a group of judges and will receive a final grade.  That grade accounts for 30% of his final grade in his AP Literature class, so it's a pretty big deal.

On the punch list:
- we had to take the front wheel off tonight in an attempt to get the upper & lower rubber stops on the forks around the headlight ears.  So we have to that all back together.
- install electrical harness and hook up everything
- battery box and all the electrical components on it put together and installed
- tank stripped; paint tank & side panels
- front fender assembled and put back together
- front brake caliper installed and brakes bled
- paint switches and red lettering for both sides
- hook up oil lines and fill with oil
- carbs - being cleaned right now one by one.  Finish cleaning those, assemble, install and synch
- air box installed
- Headlight installed into bucket
- Horn installed
- Chain installed
- Headers & mufflers installed

A few other bits & pieces here & there as well.  Seems like a lot but the "big" items are getting the tins painted and getting the carbs done.
