And after the taste test, the winner is....Richland Rum.  By only a hair, Richland Rum edged out the 10 year Bulleit Bourbon, although we both admitted the Bulleit was really good.  Just that Richland Rum has the caramel/vanilla aftertaste that put it over the top.

And now you know what Bill and I did while Logan worked on lacing the rims!  ::)

Bill's excellent explanation taught both Logan and I how to lace the rim.  Logan got the front one done in about 20 minutes.  But the back one?  Well, after 2 hours of lacing, unlacing, relacing (rinse, wash, repeat) we finally all realized that Buchanan's had indeed sent the wrong size outer spokes for the 17" rear rim that goes on the 78K model bikes.  Many on here (Stoli and others) have alluded to this happening with them before as well, so we knew it was a possibility.  Tomorrow, I'll call them and try to get the problem rectified.  It may well end up by me sending the hub and rim to Buchanan's along with the spokes/nipples and having them fit it, lace it, and true it for me.

Waiting on some parts to come in so we can button the engine up.  In the meantime, we're trying to sort out the replacement wiring harness.  Comparing that to the old one brought up a question.  What the heck is this?

It comes from the part of the harness that goes toward the rear of the bike.  But I don't recall seeing it connected or have a clue how what it might be used.  I don't know that I've ever seen a connector like this.

Brake light switch (rear). Connects to the rear brake pedal via a spring. Mounts on a bracket that is held on by one of the engine mount bolts - same place as the main battery ground I believe.

I'll have to try that one.  I don't drink a ton of bourbon...much more scotch and Richland Rum.

Stoli,
When Buchanan's sent you the wrong rear spokes....was the problem with the length of the spoke in the bend?  They seem to need to be longer before they bent them.  When you put them through the rim and try to get them to fold over in the direction they need to go (outside spokes only), these aren't long enough to even bend down without using some force.  So when they go through the hole they end up pulling the hub wayyyyyy outside the center of the rim.  So far that the outside spokes on the other side can't even reach it to start pulling it back.

Despite the lady from Buchanan's insistence on the phone, these are NOT the correct outside spokes for this rim.

Yup. That was the issue I had with the 78K rears that they sent. I sent them back with a pair of the originals and they fixed them. You'd think by now they would have learned that the 78K rear hub might be slightly different from the earlier years. I think a big factor is that their spokes are thicker than the stock ones so the bend has to be perfect for them to fit.

Yeah, unfortunately I cut mine to get them off so I just threw them away after they sat around for a while.  It appears I'm going to have to send them the hub/rim and let them fix it.  It'll cost more but at least they can true it for me that way too.

Is it possible that when we put the shift shaft back into the engine to put it in "out of phase" by about 90 degrees or so?  With the gear shifting mechanism assembled (and it appears to be correctly assembled in that each piece is moving and trying to what it is supposed to do, it doesn't change the gears.  Instead, it will rotate the notched piece (#13 in the parts drawing) a little in each direction but it never changes the gear.

I suppose a better question is:  before putting the shift gears all back together, I could rotate the whole assembly of #13 and the roller pins, etc that are behind it by hand...but it would only rotate about 30 or 40 degrees...some in either direction.  Should I be able to rotate that enough by turning it with my hand to make it change gears?

Are we about to have to crack the cases open again?   >:(

Take heed, Ron. Bill has stumbled upon a goldmine of good fortune. He tells you a little bit each time, you come back bearing gifts (libations) he drinks, you learn, then repeat.

By the time you and Logan wrap this up, you'll be experts and Bill will need 6 months in Betty Ford.

OK, well we got back from dinner and went ahead and took the cases back apart.  Now that we're in here with the offending pieces at our disposal, how does one tell when it is in neutral?  Because I REALLY don't want to take this thing back apart again.   :'(

If you turn crankshaft and at the same time  you can hold and keep output shaft ( front sprocket) not moving you are in neutral. Right guys???

There are a few ways you can tell it is in neutral.  Here's the way I double checked mine. With everything else assembled correctly (including the pins and plate, #13, #11 in correct relation to rest of shift drum) and neutral switch installed, you can feel the neutral switch engage the indentation on shifter drum. If the plate. #13, is installed correctly, the notch should be in about or just past the 10 o'clock position. Hope that makes sense, it did in my head ;D

Reassembled the engine in about 20 minutes.  Got the gearshift assembly together...shifts like butta now.
Got the cylinders on without breaking a ring *happy dance*.  By the way, using Bill's tools made ALL the difference in the world.  Something that took us a few hours the other night and resulted in 2 broken rings (yes the #2 ring on both 1 & 4 was broken) only took about 10 - 15 minutes today when we had the proper tools.

Got the cylinders almost into the bottom but when we went to put in one side, the other side would rise slightly.  Kept leaving about a millimeter gap on one of the sides and Logan had to go back to school for a soccer commitment, so we left it there for the day.

Okay, in the second photo, I also had to do a test fit of the sprocket cover and the shifter cover so that I could see what it is going to look like with the polished aluminum and the stainless steel allen bolts I purchased.  Has me excited now.  Hoping to get the cylinders down into the cases tomorrow and get the head on and cam towers on so we can get this thing in the frame.  Starting to feel like Stella is cooperating instead of being a witch with a B!

Haha.  No, we took him an extra can of the VHT Engine Metallic paint that we used to paint our cases because he said he hadn't seen one with that blue'ish tint before.  Bill used them to paint this set of carbs to go on his dragster bike named Calendar Girl.  She's already a beauty but these carbs with the blue'ish tint and the chrome bowls and tops are going to have her dressed up for her date with the dyno either this week or next as he gets her ready to race.
