Those little noise-reducing rubber pieces that go in the fins....what do you put on those to make them stay in there and not fly out?

I think titanium blue tappet covers is an excellent idea, for what it's worth.

When new they have little nubs that fit into the small column of holes cast into the fins.

I have the old ones that came out. Do they still sell these things? I haven't seen them anywhere.

Service Honda still lists them. Part number 12620-286-000...

at $3.49 each!  :o

Indicates twenty are required, so that's only $70!  :(

I think member FrankenFrankenstuff might be making them (or he was thinking about it, not sure)

+1 for Franken Finserts. He doesn't stock them but I'm sure he can do a batch, great guy to work with.

PM him, he has a thread in the parts for sale section for repro side covers and tank badges.

I will need those Franken Finserts too. Ron - I just noticed that probably you guys made one mistake.I think that  overflow tube holder on the back of engine shouldn't be that far to the right side, most likely closer to the middle. Please check this - it can interfere with something during installation.

Good catch danyo!  8) I wasn't even looking at that in the pictures. The holder for the carb overflow tubes does indeed need to be moved over to the bolt next to the vent tube at the back of the engine. This is a through-bolt with a nut on the bottom, and since this is the case I usually prefer to put the engine in the frame first, then put this little holder back on. Otherwise it tends to get mangled when wrangling the engine back in the frame.  :o  ;)

Got it back in the frame.  We have had very limited time to work on the bike most nights this week due to the amount of homework for Logan.  We actually went down there after 9:30 tonight to put the engine in the frame because I didn't want to leave it sitting on the carpet the whole weekend while he & I are gone on a tour of some of his final list colleges.

danyo,
Nice catch on that.  I originally had it in the middle one because I thought that's where it came from, but looking at the parts drawing, it looks more like it's on the corner one so we moved it.  We took it off to get the engine in the frame, now we need to put it back on the middle bolt and cinch it down.

It looks lonely without its carbs, tank, steering and wheels.... :-\

But it sure looks pretty!

For Logan's project, is there a hard deadline in the future that he must meet to have the bike completed? Or since Mike has been involved with the rebuild and progress, is that covered? Not that I don't see this bike being wrapped up quite soon, just asking-

And is there a paper/documentation requirement for the project beyond the build "thread" he must fulfill? Lastly, has he taken his MSF course yet too?

And is there a paper/documentation requirement for the project beyond the build "thread" he must fulfill? Lastly, has he taken his MSF course yet too?

The project has several portions to it:
1)  A profile of his project facilitator (aka Mike) had to be done in November
2)  A project notebook of his work plan and other stuff was turned in about 2 or 3 weeks ago
3)  A project log of his hours spent on the project was due as well a few weeks ago
4)  Final presentation of the project

That last one is the big one and is the hard & fast deadline for the project.  This is actually a county-wide thing that all of Cherokee County high schools require for graduating seniors (there are a few exceptions...kids who do half day in HS and half day in college are exempted, as an example).  Logan's high school has something like 2800 students in it, so that means there are between 650 and 700 seniors to present these things.  In other words, it is being done in several classrooms over a period of a couple of weeks.

Those projects usually are presented throughout the last weeks of April and sometimes into the first week of May.  So we have planned all along that our drop-dead date was the first of April but we have set a personal goal of getting it done by March 15th so that we have a couple of weeks to work with.

For the presentation, they have between 6 and 10 minutes to present and they're penalized if they go over 10.  If he wants to show the bike on other than a PowerPoint presentation, then they have to be able to walk outside and back in within the 10 minute window.  He does want to show it so the plan is that I'll ride it up to the school that morning and have it waiting at a spot right outside the closest door from whichever classroom where he ends up doing his presentation.  He'll speak for just about 2 or 3 minutes and show slides of the start to finish process and then walk them outside to the bike, which we will hopefully start up for them to hear.  Then they'll walk back in.

For the presentations, there are 3 judges of the projects who are volunteers from the community...primarily parents but there are a bunch of retired ladies and gentlemen who come every year to judge these projects.  Also in the classroom will be about 20 - 30 students as well, so he'll be presenting to a fairly large group.  The project isn't graded or judged versus other students (ie there is no 1st, 2nd, 3rd prize etc); it is only graded for a course grade.  However, whatever grade he receives on his final project ends up being 35% of his English grade for the final semester...so an A on the project is a big part of a good score in one of his core classes.

As far as the MSF course, neither one of us has taken it yet.  We both have to go take our GA motorcycle learner's written test first and we've been holding off on that until we get closer to the end of the build.  The GA learner's permit is good for 6 months of solo riding on non-interstate roads.  I'm thinking that we both go take the test towards the end of this month and get our learner's, then I'll sign us up for one of the MSF courses.

I recently saw where Killer Creek Harley Davidson runs them fairly regularly so I'll probably sign us up ones there.  The course runs Thursday and Friday evenings, then pretty much all day on Saturday.  But once you pass that class, it satisfies the riding requirement for the Georgia license to get you the permanent GA motorcycle license.  We'll do that class together, which shouldn't be a problem because you do the riding portion of the class on their bikes, which appear to be 250's, from what the documentation states.

Here in VA, the MSF supplants the state License. Meaning, that passing the written portion of the MSF course (required to perform the riding test) occurs Sunday AM, then riding course Sunday PM. It's a two day class often here, and my sons and wife took their licensing requirements that way.

There is an exception: in VA despite my 16 year old taking the M class, he still can not ride individually until he has his full license (16 and 3 months, or 9 full months of Learners possession). It's an whacky regulation, but walking up to the DMV with the MSF certificate they handed him an M class license. So you might check these stipulations in GA to avoid the double fee of Written Exam. And I do know the MSF written portion is pretty standard for completion prior to the Riding exam.

Ahhh...very good idea.  I think I'll call over to Killer Creek and ask them about that before signing up to take the exam at the DMV.  Thanks for that info.

Same for TN. Definitely a good idea to call them to check.

Wow these regulations may seem stringent, to me it's scary to think a 16 yo can legally ride a 100+ hp crotch rocket with just a half day hands-on training...

Not only that but the MSF course is optional?

Not saying you can't be responsible, I'm sure you all are here, just saying this is truly scary...

True, the U.S. should adopt restrictions like Europe and Asia to confine riders to smaller displacement bikes for lengths of time. And the licensing and examinations for ALL drivers need to be drastically improved.

But, even on a 23hp machine, a rider can kill themself or others, so it doesn't seem to genuinely matter (kind of like the argument against high capacity magazines and hand guns)

Restriction is one thing, training is another. I was not allowed to ride "full-power" (which was 100hp at that) for 2 years, after almost 6 months of training (and that's without failing a single test and showing up twice a week for training), and I sure am glad for both.

Let's not go there, not here.

Ron just make sure your kids know what riding one of these things means.

Yep, no doubt.  Logan will be allowed to ride this bike a couple of times to realize how cool it is to build something then get to enjoy it, but make no mistake about it...this is Dad's bike!  Now, I have offered to both of my sons that I'll be glad to buy another SOHC bike and restore it for each one of them.  They'll be expected to help with the build but I'll pay for it and even do most of the heavy lifting on it since both of them are very busy with school.

But if/when they do get bikes, I intend to be a bit anal about them riding them along with me to start.  At least until I'm confident that they are capable riders and HOPEFULLY, respect the danger of others around you as well as the danger of what riding at high speeds can do to you.

Personally, I think teaching kids to ride a motorcycle early is a great way to cement excellent driving habits. It teaches them the full time requirement of concentration, they can't text while riding, they need to learn to operate a manual transmission (something become scarcer by the day in the US) and they must learn to maneuver their weight to steer a bike. All these aspects impart better driving habits. Constant scanning of traffic while riding makes them infinitely more dfensive drivers too.

If we have parented our kids well, then their bah our behind the wheel or on top of the seat, will be first rate. But operating a car or bike requires skills envelop net and experience. Something I believe is accelerated by riding a bike.

I've even got my 20 yo planned for an Advanced Rider course this summer after 3 years of riding to improve and hone his skills. It's a lifelong effort to become a safe and accomplished rider.
