Logan and I finally decided to register the bike in Vermont.  We had considered just registering it here in Georgia but decided to do the Vermont thing and then register it in Georgia to try and get a title for it.

So I'm filling out the form right now but not sure how to calculate the fees so I can send in a check with the application for the proper amount.  Anyone know how to calculate that?

Honda part number 07954-3000000 (from the manual). The single part number includes both pieces (as indicated in the manual) since two pieces are required to do the job. With shipping it was $48.66.

Thanks, have used car type piston ring clamps and tricky to remove once piston is engaged, so ordered a set from DSS, but in UK almost double the US price  :'(

Hey Bill,

Just curious because I've never taken the cylinders off my 750.  Will the larger 450 type work on stock bores?
Just thinking ahead if at some point I might need to bore my cylinders.  Also if you might know, will they work for a GL1000?

Thanks

Charlie

Should be the ones for a GL 1000. I'll try mine on a stocker, but think not enough compressing of rings, Bill

What he said!
I'll never touch doing piston rings again without one of these.  Once we had finished, I returned Bill's to him and it was the next day that we discovered we had put the cam chain tensioner guide on backwards.  We were able to take it apart and put it back together without taking the head back off.  But if we HAD needed to remove the head again, I had already told Mike and Logan that there was no way I was going to do it without the tool.  If necessary, I was going to drive 45 minutes back to Bill's house, borrow the tools and then return them back to him once we were done.  It just simply makes the job that much easier.

The chamfer on the top of the tool is perfectly suited for the chamfer on the bottom of the cylinder sleeve.  You just get the rings compressed, let the head slide down gently onto the chamfer and lightly tap it a few more times until the rings are inside....then pull the tool out.  It's night and day less effort, stress and worry about breaking a ring.

Got the tank sanded down and it's ready to do the skim coat of bondo on the 4 or 5 small low spots in the tank.  We couldn't resist sitting it up on the bike along with the seat.

Gotta say, I'm digging the "raw" look.  We aren't going to leave it like that but it is kind of sexy.

Very little left to do on the bike other than painting the tank and side covers.  Still have to finish the wiring.  We'll bleed the brakes tonight.  Chain guard needs to go on.  Then it's pretty much sit back and wait for the carb rebuild kits to arrive on Friday.

Did you finally decide on a tank/side cover color?

We did.  We're going to do....TWO DIFFERENT COLORS!  :D

LOL, well first we're going to do the Candy Gold color.  Logan and I both love that color but the problem is getting the decals to go on the tank.  We don't think that either of the 2 decal sets that go on the 78 tank will look good with the gold.  So I'm meeting with a friend who has a decal business this week to discuss having him make me a custom set of black ones that match the pattern of the 78's but don't have the other colors to clash with the gold.

Then, I think I'm going to go ahead and fix up the 2nd tank and buy a 2nd set of side covers and another petcock.  That set will be Planet Blue Metallic and use the decals that normally go on the black 78.

So, what I'll end up with is a gold bike for a while.  Then when I get tired of it being gold, I'll swap out the tank & side panels and go to the blue color!  8)

I like your thinking Ron, being able to change the look when you want to. It's a bit like my choice in clothes - I have one blue pair of jeans, one black pair of jeans, and a dozen or so black T-shirts so I can mix and match. Don't need anything else. Shame I can't get the wife to see it that way ;D

I know what you mean about the raw look - I nearly went that way with mine, but the tank just had one too many dings in it.

With all this progress you'll soon be twiddling your thumbs. Got another project in mind?

The bike is looking great.  I think with the shape of the tank, the Planet Blue is going to look fantastic.

Well, I'm taking the Motorcycle Safety Foundation class April 9-13, after which I intend to put some miles on Stella.

But, I've already been scouring the interwebs looking for the next bike.  I've got my eye on a few that may turn out to be contenders but I doubt that I'll do anything until late summer on buying another one.  I coach a travel baseball team during the summer and we have games literally every single day of the summer.  The team is a bunch of 17 year olds so I spend some time with them and then a good bit of time with the college coaches who are scouting the players.  From mid-May when we start until that winds down in mid-July, I don't have a lot of free time on my hand.  The good news is that I will be riding Stella to a lot of the games this summer.

I'm glad you posted that.  I've been toying with the idea of going ahead and putting the exhausts onto the bike but there are a few things we need to finish before we do that.  So, you posting your photo with the pipes on is a really big help.

Also, thank you very much for the info on the Vermont title.  I had a great chat with a guy from the Vermont DMV and then dropped off my check and application in the mail today.

Edited:
Steve-o, can you do me a favor and take a photo of the rear turn signals and how/where they connect to the bike on the K7?  I have some rear signal lights with stems but can't figure out how to make them attach correctly along with this grab bar I have on it.

Here's a brilliant example of gold with black stripes...

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,131724.425.html

As for your next project, look no further than Bill's backyard! Plenty of great candidates there and, as you know, he's got everything you'll ever need to build a real dream  :D

Thanks, cal.  And you have a point; I might just go see about buying one from Bill.

The problem with that gold one is that's a pre-77 tank so that stripe looks different on there than on a 78 one; which is the big honking tank.  That is a beautiful bike though.  It's bikes like that which made us decide on the gold.

Sure, but I don't have the grab bar and not putting one on. This is nowhere near a stock restoration, more like a get it running and back on the road so I can sell it! Hope this helps...

Dont fix the temporay tank too high above carbs when bench testing as can cause pressue to be too high.

I think you are wrong there. The weight of the fuel pressing down is what creates the pressure on the float and that doesn't change in any measurable way even if the tank is 10 feet off the ground.

Those are located and oriented properly. The base of the signal rests on the outside of the frame, the grab bar mounting bolt captures the signal bracket and threads into the fender through the hole in the end of the frame. The wires just route up under the seat to the harness connectors closer to the front of the fender. Ignore the extra outer bracket in the picture below, that is one of the mounting points for my rear luggage rack as well.
