1975 CB550F - is this Tank compatible? seat gap?
« on: October 06, 2014, 02:50:05 PM »
Hey all, would love some insight if available. My bike is a 1975 CB550F and the previous owner put a 1974 tank on it apparently so there is a gap between the seat and tank

Now I love the style of the tank too much to paint over so I think I want to save it for another build and just purchase a new tank. Ideally I would find the exact tank that went with it to eliminate the seat gap but I like the look of this tank

The guy selling this says it is off a 1977 CB550K, I read around to see if I could find the answer but couldn't get a confirmed result. Anyone happen to know if this tank will fit on my frame and would there be a seat gap? I plan to have my seat reupholstered but would prefer the fit to be exact because Im not sure if the upholstery would take care of gap
Thanks, also open to recommendations

I think The Black tank is from A 750.

The paint looks close Stev-o but the emblem and overall shape look different?

I found another listing for a tank that looks close to the one I like, and I notice the front tank mounts are way more forward on the tank then my current tank.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/75-76-77-78-Honda-750-CB750A-CB750K-Hondamatic-Fuel-Gas-Tank-/231348357203?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35dd6fc853&vxp=mtr

So I guess before I purchase the tank pictured in my first post, anyone know reasons I shouldn't due to fitment? I'm taking a gamble but considering I am look at reupholstering my seat anyways if i have to anyways might as well make it work I would be happy.

Appreciate all input, thank you guys

Edit: Okay so i bought it based on this quote I found deep in forum history it isnt a complete confirmation but a bias toward it fitting

Quote
Gas door sunken cap CB550 models are: 75-77 CB550F, 77-78 CB550K.

I will post to confirm this in my project thread when it arrives and check the fitment.
If I messed up and bought a tank that wont fit then I am an idiot and feel free to point it out.

The Cb550 F model, as well as the 77 78 Cb550K Models all had the same shape tank... with the flip up door.

But they are NOT the same as the 750, which I believe are wider.

TwoTired, I appreciate your input because if what your saying is true and the ebay listing is correct it will be a perfect fit. Excited, thanks!

Sorry.   The black tank pictured is NOT a CB550 tank.  The flip up doors on the 550 do not have a bend in them.  And the tank sides are rounded rather than ridged like in the picture.
I'd say the fit is a maybe and the ebay seller just doesn't know or care what he actually has.

Thank you for looking into this, he said it came off a 77 cb550k so in the event it is a nightmare getting it to fit I should be covered under listing policy incase I want to return it but if it within my power to make it fit I totally going to rock it

The styling crease, and striping deffinately id this tank as a 77-78 750K tank.

Yeah doing google searches for 77-78 550k yields no results with this tank but 77-78 750k I see plenty with this tank. So I've got all my fingers and toes crossed mounting this on my 75 cb550f will work because if it doesnt I will have to keep my eye out for a 77-78 750k project bike (which would still be fun, maybe try my hand at a bobber)

You can measure fron to back from the mounting cups to where the rear of the tank fits the rubber mount. But that tank in the pic is definitely not an 550F tank.

I definitely will be doing this in the future but probably on my next bike project, thinking about a 550/750 bobber. I want at least one motorcycle I can have a babe on back.
