Washington Redskins and other NFL Team names.
« on: October 07, 2014, 12:10:06 PM »
No matter which side you are on in this matter, this is funny. Here
is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an
article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins.

Dear Mr. Page:
I always love your articles and I generally agree with them.
I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by
the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue
that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would
exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to
offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must
move forward.
Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the
Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference
the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the
Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of
militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white folk.
The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a
team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference
to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives.
I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion
among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New
Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.
Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and
pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the
Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!
Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message
to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting
or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.
The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a
growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children.
The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to
our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message
to our children. So, there you go. We need to support any legislation
that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will
likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of
thing the do-nothing Congress loves.

As a die hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in
mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the
Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than "the Beavers."   :o

"Redskins" is what they collected bounties on. It is not like The Warriors or The Braves or any other highly regarded symbol. I have to agree it's time for the name to go.

A friends response . . .

I would have to disagree with the proposed change to the San Diego Chargers' name, not only because I am a devoted Chargers fan, but because the team's name clearly promotes the electric vehicle industry so fondly sponsored by the ever-progressive Peoples' Republic of California.

Further, I must object to changing the team names at OSU. The prospect of admiring attractive, healthy, hot and sweaty Beavers - on the hoof, so to speak - undoubtedly attracts a significant amount of admissions revenues to help support athletic programs there. Every school needs athletic supporters.

We need to propose alternative names, as well, rather than just removing offensive current names without offering any improvements. I propose that instead of the Arizona Cardinals - an obvious reference to Catholicism - we change it to the Arizona Wetbacks. The Denver Broncos might be better named the Denver Butterflies, since they're all floating on a cloud of smoke now. The Kansas City Beefs would do well to remember that fine city's heritage, and since the original 49ers settled nearer Sacramento, the San Francisco team might better be called the Mixed Nuts.

The LA Crips would be in the running, too, especially if police sirens were handed out to the fans. Drizzles would aptly describe Washington, but I'm not certain that would prove to be an inspiring name for the players. Any other candidates?

Your anecdotal reference is incorrect. It hails from the original tribal name of a regional group of warriors, whom, painted their faces "red" when entering into battle as a tactic of intimidation.

At the end of the day, EVERYONE needs to get over it and move on. What an absolute waste of public money for elected officials to weigh in on this arcane issue. Give me a TAX break!!!!!

They were the Redskins well BEFORE everyone got their newfound sensitivities on. So therefore it was not aimed at any of those newfound sensitive types and they should have no problem. I say no new names as such.

The Redskins are an institution named after brave warriors. WTF is wrong with that?!

How about the Washington Pansies!  Or even the Washington Football Team...........

You'll never convince me anyone is truly offended. Just lots of PC wannabes hopping on the "just cause" bandwagon. Too bad they don't express as much concern for the Sh!t that actually matters in this world like: hunger, poverty, disease, illiteracy, violence, energy, and jobs (just to name a few).

Yeah I guess all these organizations and individuals should just sit down and shut up as you obviously know so much more about this issue and who is really behind it.

In current dictionaries of American English, the word “redskins” is classified as "usually offensive", "disparaging", "insulting", and "taboo". The usage section of the definition of "redskin" in the Oxford English Dictionary states that through the process of pejoration, the originally neutral term acquired an unfavorable connotation and became a term of disparagement.  It is generally avoided in public usage except by sports teams.

Although often assumed to be a debate of recent origins, the local Washington, DC newspapers have published news items on the controversy many times since at least 1971, all in response to Native American individuals or organizations asking for the name to be changed.

There was a protest at the 1992 Super Bowl between the Redskins and the Buffalo Bills  held in Minnesota, and many Native Americans from the region came out to protest the name. The American Indian Movement's (AIM) Vernon Bellecourt was one of the main organizers of the protest.

Those officially censuring and/or demanding the name be changed include 23 Native American tribes and more than 50 organizations that represent various groups of Native Americans.

The Anti-Defamation League was one of the organizations signing a letter to broadcasters urging them to avoid using the name.

In a meeting March 1, 2014, the Board of Directors of the Central Atlantic Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC) unanimously passed a resolution proposing that its members boycott Washington Redskins games and shun products bearing the team’s logo until the team changes its name and mascot.

Rev. Graylan Hagler, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Washington, DC has spoken against the Redskins name for 20 years.

In 1992, the Central Conference of American Rabbis issued a resolution calling for the end of sports teams names that promote racism, in particular the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Redskins.

In 2013 a group of sixty-one religious leaders in Washington, D.C. sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and team owner Dan Snyder stating their moral obligation to join the Change the Mascot movement due to the offensive and inappropriate nature of the name which causes pain whether or not that is intended.

On June 18, 2014, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) again voted to cancel the Redskins federal trademark registrations, considering them "disparaging to Native Americans"  The trademarks were granted in 1967, so the primary factors were:
1.   that the term "redskin" refers to Native Americans (rather than having an "independent meaning" as the team sometimes claims)
2.    that the use of the term is disparaging or pejorative to a "substantial composite" of  Native Americans during the period beginning in 1967.

The University of Minnesota has asked the Minnesota Vikings to keep the Washington team's name from being used in printed materials or uttered by the game announcer at the school’s stadium in Minneapolis where the Vikings are playing while their stadium is under construction. University President Eric Kaler has stated that the Redskins name is “offensive and should be replaced.

Charles Krauthammer, political columnist, wrote that unlike other examples of "the language police" he dislikes, use of the term redskins has become a pejorative and that the name should be changed.

Bob Costas, (NBC Sports): Redskins’ name was “undeniably” a slur.  He also states that opposition to the name is not "political correctness run amok" given the definitions of redskin in modern dictionaries as offensive, unlike any other word associated with Native Americans such as Chiefs or Warriors.

Tony Dungy, former NFL coach and current NBC analyst: "A couple of weeks ago, someone asked Dungy in the NBC viewing room when the name should change. 'Fifteen years ago,' Dungy said." He also says he will no longer use the name on-air.

Mike Holmgren, president of the Cleveland Browns, stated in an interview that the name should absolutely change.

New York Knicks president Phil Jackson: "The use of the name Redskins is highly offensive."

Mark Murphy CEO of the Green Bay Packers and former Redskins player: [nickname is] "derogatory to a lot of people".

Champ Bailey, a former Redskins player, said that "When you hear a Native American say that 'Redskins' is degrading, it's almost like the N-word for a black person. If they feel that way, then it's not right. They are part of this country. It's degrading to a certain race. Does it make sense to have the name?"

Peter King, (Sports Illustrated): "I can do my job without using "Redskins", and I will."

Hasn't their given name always been the Redskins? Was it not meant to insinuate a courageous tribe? With that being said and not being a native American I find it to be an institution and not being derogatory but I am white, err that should be Euro-American or more specifically Irish American. I guess I kinda resent terms being changed such as gay to fit newfound sensitivities. Are all homosexuals happy and carefree (I didn't resort to Websters)? Why is it now that the term homophobic means something other than fear of homosexuals? When did a phobia become a hate? In this regards we should change all phobias to hates then no one would ever have a fear of anything. We just need to force the sale so the current owner will relinquish the team just as they have in basketball. Have you ever considered changing your given name to Iron Oxide? What if another Rust didn't like it? And Steve, that is not meant as an inflammatory comment to you, just an example of the crap of today's society, and I hope you do NOT take it that way.

Steve has done quite a bit of legitimate research to back his contentions and I applaud him for that. One day the name or maybe more appropriately the moniker will change. These things often times take generations. Evolution. In the mean time why not accept the owners contentions that it is not meant as a derogatory statement but rather a brave and proud label?!

Exactly, Jerry! The sensitivity police can kiss my arse. The gumption to tell a private business what it can and cannot do is heinous. Yeah Steve, I've seen all that too. And as I said, I remain unconvinced as the origin of the team name, not the vernacular, is homage to a warrior tribe.

But, if you want to touchy-feely all the rough edges in society over horse crap like mascots, team names, products, etc, then as posted in the OP's "reply" to the author's letter, why stop here? Let's round up all the possible affronts and spend countless thousands and millions of private and public dollars on completey inane #$%*e!

Grow up, man up, and get over yourselves. I need tutelage on how/what to call a sports team from the likes of the PC police and its minions like I need another third tit.
