Reg/Rect feels hot and battery not charging
« on: October 12, 2014, 11:14:04 PM »
Let me start off by saying I'm running a Rick's Reg/Rec Combo, Dyna S Ignition/Dyna 3ohm Coils on a completely redone and rewired 1979 CB650. I am not running the CDI modules, I am essentially running like you would a 550/750.

As I was idling the bike for maybe 5-10 minutes I noticed the reg/rect was getting pretty damn hot, to the point where the black epoxy or whatever molds in the reg/rec was getting somewhat soft/mushy to the touch. I also noticed that the battery which appeared to be normal at first was now dipping into the 10V range and obviously just discharging.

Alternator to Reg/Rec looks like this:
Yellow—Yellow
Yellow—Yellow
Yellow—Yellow
White—White
Black—Green

I guess the field coil wires coming off the 650 alternator are black/white and not green/white like most other Honda's?

Reg/Rec output looks like this:
Red—Battery +
Green—Battery -
Black—12v Switched

The bike was running before the rebuild so I don't think the stator etc. are bad. But I do find it odd that I have it hooked up the same as a 550 and 750 I built that both run great.

Any ideas or obvious errors would be great.

Is this a fresh KNOWN good battery topped off with water? Have you put it on a charger and taken it in for a load test?

Not sure on the brush holders, and no I haven't

It's a brand new Ballistic 8 Cell battery that's fully charged. Need brakes before I can take it for a ride and see what happens. Just found it was off how hot it was getting, but maybe they all get that way?

That's somewhat comforting at least. I will get it running and see what happens. Thanks for now.

The 650 field is wired differently than a 550 or 750. The 550/750 have one side of the field, the green wire, connected to ground through the wiring harness. The white field wire is supplied a varying positive voltage from the regulator. On the 650, one side of the field is connected to +12 volts, (always black), and the other end of the field is connected to ground through the regulator, in varying amounts.
To use the earlier reg, you need to connect the black field wire to the white reg wire, and connect the other field wire to ground. These connections will have to be done at the ends of the field wires themselves, not through the stock harness.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Oh Scottly I love you. So I will connect black from the field to white on the reg and the white from the field to ground? There's a lot of ground connecting but that makes sense. Please confirm good sir. I am using a modern Ricks reg/rect.

Yes, as long as those connections are all isolated from the stock harness. BTW, your reg may now be toast, maybe not, but maybe. After all, it did get a bit hot. ;)
