Hello from SoCal + pics!
« on: October 02, 2006, 10:45:30 AM »
Hi everyone, just introducing myself. I live in Dana Point, CA and recently picked up a 1970 CB750 out of the Pennysaver for FREE. That's the good part...the bummer is that the engine is completely disassembled in crates and looks as though it was stored in the bilge of a ship–lots of rust. So, I think there will be a few engine component purchases in my future! Plans are for a cafe project, and I'm really glad that I decided to go with a CB750 rather than a BMW R-series (which I was also considering). I've got to admit, the price may have had something to do with my decision.  ;)

My frame tag lists 8/70 as the build date, and the serial starts with CB750-105...am I correct in assuming that I've got a K1?

Jim

Jim, a little off topic as far as your question is concerned,(I own a k5), but how far is Dana point
from San Clemente? I was there recently, that sounds familiar.  I'd bet you've ridden the Ortega Highway over to Elsinore? That road RULES!!!!! Was wishing I had my 750 while I was there.

Yes, Dana Point abuts San Clemente to the north, and I live about 10 minutes from the western end of Ortega Hwy. Even with the occasional slow freight-train of cruisers, you're right, that road is amazing! My K1 is going to be getting a regular workout there when it's done. :D

Here are some pics of my project "as received" and sitting in my shop:

Lovingly stored since 1975 :-\ GL1000 front end is on its way.

Ill-advised single-shock setup...

Apparently the engine components were stored underwater...anyone need a low-mileage cam? ;)

Hey Jinx,Welcome to the club! You have some good things going on....you have a hell of a winter project going on and winter is coming on.You found this site so you will have answers to the mazillion questions you WILL be asking. After seeing that box of parts(the one that looks like it was in the lake for awhile),you might want to get the ebay going and find a used motor for cheap. If it gets to be Feb. or March and you don't think you will be ready to go by May or June, you might consider getting a bike that is already up and running so you don't miss the 2007 season. The project will still be there waiting.Whatever happens, good luck to you and enjoy!!!!!

Thanks MrBreeze! The eBay buying orgy started about a week ago. Right now I'm assembling parts to do a GL1000 front end swap; just about have all the parts on their way. Noel stopped by yesterday with his CB500 and helped me recycle some Newcastles. I got a closeup look at his GL1000 setup and seeing it in person helped alot. I'm starting with the rolling chassis, then when that's ready to go I figure I'll get to the motor. The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards buying a salvaged motor out of a "running" bike (about $400). Makes me a little nervous as to how long it'll last, but anything's better than what I've got in those crates. Luckily, the headers and carbs that came with the bike look ok/rebuildable. Maybe someday I'll take the case I've got and build a real screamer out of it.

Jim's a good guy, and he's not stingy with the beer. His handrolled cigarettes look like doobies, though, and I about crapped myself when he pulled one out on the sidewalk in front of his place and lit up.  :D

Let me know when you want to stop by and pick up those forks.

Funny as hell. Jim sends me an email asking to get a look at my front end setup and on the 10 mile ride to his place my right fork seal blows wide open. I show up to his place with fork oil literally dripping down the fork leg.

Impressed the hell out of him, I'm sure.

Yeah, I suppose I'd better pick up that other set of fork legs before you swap them out with the ones that are blowing seals, eh?  ;D

Actually, I was impressed with the front end swap...must have been a real #$%* working out the steering stem issues on the 500, and I think you made the best of a difficult situation with the old bar riser holes. Once we get those axle spacers done it'll be sweet. That license plate bracket has got to go though! It was all I could do to keep from hauling out the break/shear and making something on the spot. ;)

This weekend I've got family coming from out of town, but after that I'm good through Saturday. I'll get in touch after the weekend and we'll figure it out.

The eBay feeding frenzy is over for awhile, and I picked up some goodies for the swap:

'76 GL1000 master cylinder
'75 GL1000 19" aluminum front wheel with rotors
'75 GL1000 triple clamps
'77 GL1000 17" aluminum rear wheel (gonna be $110 for custom spokes & nipples dammit, guess Buchanan's doesn't stock a set to lace up a 17" rim)
'76 GL1000 calipers with brackets & manifold/switch
'78 GL1000 front axle clamps

Almost there...

Yeah, once I get the front end and rear wheel on, then I'll just have to replace the frame and motor with goldwing pieces and I'll be done!

Hey, welcome from a fellow SoCal'r.  I grew up in Costa Mesa (now in Garden Grove) and I would ride my 350four up and down Ortega back in the '80's.  Now the bike is a project as well.  Hope to ride it soon again after we move out to Lake Elsinore.

I'm just thinking about your safety Noel...that license plate flaps around like a wounded pigeon and is probably the cause of the list to port indicated by your off-center freeway stripe...reminds me of an abandoned schooner in a strong gale. I'll have to cite the, "perverse invisibility of insane proportion" rule as the only explanation as to why you would actually claim to like that #$%*ty little piece of twisted galvanized strap metal. Or maybe it's just your own personal manifestation of the phrase, "One tiny flaw, because perfection is for God alone"?  ;D ;D ;D

But hey, if you're into it who am I to argue?  ::)
