Ignition timing issue.
« on: October 13, 2014, 09:41:04 AM »
Hey guys! This is bike is not a Honda nor an SOHC, but I'm sure someone can still point me in the right direction.

Here is the bike:

1980 KZ550 DOHC

Here are the details:

Compression reads within clearances.
Rings and valve shims have been replaced and are within clearances.
Valves have been lapped.
Bike has pod filters. Yes I understand the pain of pods. You don't have to remind me.

Bike has new points and condensers.
New Dyna high-output coils.
Silicon wires.

The problem:

I set the points gap and then setup my timing light. It's a fancy light with digital advance. The sensor shows you how to attach it to the plug wire. A certain side has to point in the direction of the plug, it reads. But the light only flashes when I put the sensor on the wire the wrong way. Weird. However, I set the 1/4 timing like that, and then moved on to the the 2/3. I can't remember which way we put the sensor on the wire, but we could only get the light to flash sporadically. Like it is miss firing. Pulled the plug out, put it against the engine and got an orange spark. I was under the impression I want a fat blue spark. Sure enough, 4 plug gives a blue spark. What gives?

Could be a bad plug cap, the resistors inside are known to fail. Try reversing the plug wires on the Dyna coil and see if the prange spark stays with the plug - cap or cable issue probably - or changes - coil issue maybe?
The timing light "direction" is probably correct for car ignitions, although I didn't know there was a preferred spark voltage polarity. With dual-fire plus the arrow will be right for one plug on a coil and wrong for the other.

Thanks Bodi. That's definitely the next best move: more narrowing down.
