1973 CB500 carb. adjust/sync
« on: October 14, 2014, 06:17:43 AM »
I've put in new plugs (NGKD7EA),  cleaned the jets, new o-rings between the carbs and on the main jets, cleaned the points, set the timings, ( as well as I can), set the ring on the needles in the slides at the middle slot and have a manometer set on order.  My problem is I still can't get the idle set so it will idle smoothly without revving up to 3000 rpm.  I can get the idle back down to 1200 with the idle screw but then it slows down and goes dead.  When driving it runs good but takes a long time to slow back down to 1200 rpm.  All 4 plugs are dark and sooty.  black gasoline  smoke (Not too heavy) coming out both exhaust.  Has 4 into 2 Hooker pipe exhaust system.   Running way too rich.   How do I make it less rich and get control of the idle speed?

Are you running the stock airbox or pods? What jet sizes are in them?

we need to know...
what intake do you have?
what main and pilot jet sizes are in your carbs?
what is your mixture screw set at?
did you bench-sync your carbs when you had them off?

Thanks for replying.   It's a stock air box,  new air filter,..one jet is  "40"  needle says "272304"   Main jet  is "0   something"  the only one out I mangled with pliers while removing.  However it is all stock and mostly original.  had to replace 3 float valves and two slow jets with 40"s.
Air valve is out 1 1/2 turns.  Also Have checked the seal around the intake boots,  they all seem ok.. Sprayed carb. cleaner around them while it was idling and there was no change.
Also bench synced cards using 1/8 drill bit   (not on the flat side but the rounded side of the slide)
