You know what I hate? People who… have no character.
« on: October 02, 2006, 01:02:19 PM »
I mentioned last week that I scored a CB750 engine for free.  All I had to do was drive three hours, help a guy mow his fields for six hours and the engine was mine.  The engine wasn’t in great shape and would need to be rebuilt, so it wasn’t the world’s greatest find.  But anyway, I get to the guy’s property and meet with him, he tells me that someone offered him 200 bucks for the engine and he needs the money.  I remain calm.  Then he asks if I would be willing to pay 200, he’ll sell it to me.  That is when I lost it.

“Look pal, I drove 3 hours because you gave me your word that if I helped out your sorry ass, you would give me that piece of #$%* engine…  Now you tell me that you need money for it????  200 dollars! (long pause)…  Well, now I need thirty bucks for the gas money that you had me waste to get here… you have a phone which you could have used to call me and tell me that you needed money for the engine… I don’t think I should stand here any longer or I might do something I’ll regret.  Let me leave you with a few words of advice pal, don’t ever go back on your word because you destroy your character and trust.”  I hopped in the truck and drove home.

Sorry to hear, a bummer for sure. Your advice to him was right on the money, but unfortunately, likely to be lost on someone like that.

I despise people like that. Even when it's not that severe. I just hate it when someone says they'll do something, or be somewhere at a certain time, and then just blow it off.

Can't believe you left without your gas money though.  :-\

I don't mind if they aren't on time as long as I know they'll be late. My problem is with people who say, "I'll be there by 7:00 at the very latest" then show up at 7:45. No phone call, no good reason, and don't understand why you're pissed off. It's gotten to the point that I tell repeat offenders to be there at least 1/2 hour before I really need them to be there.  ::)

In all the years I lived in New Orleans, I never got used to how long it took for anyone to do anything. Just going to the grocery store was an all day event.

Funny how some people can keep their true character hidden so well for so long. Sorry to hear you had to find out after a 3 hour drive. But then, you could have been hit for a lot more. And there are those who wonder why there are pessimistic individuals out there.

My guess is that there was no one with 200 bucks coming- he just said that to try to get you to pony up...  The old bait and switch!

I've been screwed over like that before.  I never have come up with the right words to say when it happens, I just leave.  Then, usually on the ride home, I think of the right words to say- like, "You know, people that make an offer like you did, and get people like me to drive three hours on your word, and then you go back on your word- those people sometimes find that their house burns down!"   hahahahaha

Of course, you do know where he lives now.  You could take a dump in a box, and mail it to him..  Although- that might be illegal..

Thanks for your support guys.  I easily could have been much more agressive, if you know what I mean, but I wanted to maintain my character and self-respect.  Something I didn't mention.  That guy knows my dad really well, they went to high school together.  I'll just have my dad kick his ass!   ;D

Yep.... just ask the Boogey Man...

When you are acquainted with people like this, better than behaving violently, is to show you disappointment. It happened to me once with one of my father's -suppoused- best friends. He asked me for help helping one of his neighbours with some wall cabling. I discovered it was not a favour by him, but he was planning to charge the neighbour and have found himself not knowing how to finish the job. He told me to charge his neighbour and go 50-50. While I was working I was wondering why should I share the money with him when I was doing all the job. When I finished I charged the man, he gave me a tip, I said goodbye, left with all the money and told my dad about it. Never heard about neither of those men before, and I believe neither did my dad.

In those cases the best approach is to be deign, violence will satisfy you in the short term but will take out all the reason from you. Just breathe deeply, get a good meal and go back to your business. Another one will pop. It happened to me once with a Kawi KZ400. The guy told me it was mine for the taking and then changed his mind asking for money. Luckily, I didn't have to drive three hours.

Yeh, Sparty - you have to feel sorry for people like that. You know that right in the middle of them is a hole where their self respect used to be. You've just raised yours a notch or two by pointing out to him in dignified manner where he is going wrong and he has just sunk a bit further into that cess-pit he calls his life.
Do you play Rugby? The season's starting soon over here - can't wait, although I'm too geriatric to participate anymore. Definately a young man's game. :)
Cheers Chris

Many are the thngs you could have done, but showed restraint....
This is a good thing.

My advice is the live and  learn and

Laugh at least once a day.

Yeah, I am a hooligan rugby player..

I too am glad that I walked away peacefully - I was cuffed and stuffed in college and I don't want to repeat that again, plus there isn't much sport in kicking a 57 year old man's ass (no offense to the older guys on the forum).

Hey toycollector

I like that, thought I knew (or had used) all connotations of that word but......" F*cktards", now that is good.
