New guy in the Birmingham, AL area
« on: October 15, 2014, 09:02:29 AM »
Been a lurker for the most part for the past few months trying to learn as much as I can from these bikes as I grew up with vintage european bikes and a slew of antique Harley Davidsons. My name is Lucas. I'm from Florida but currently living in Birmingham, AL since I started my career as a Mechanical Engineer about a year ago.

A little about my self:  I grew up helping rebuild vintage Harley Davidsons and Indians with my dad and currently have a spectacular collection ranging from the 1920's to 1960's and a couple early 90s bikes. Wont go too in depth into the collection bc there's somewhere around 35 bikes total of which 28 are completely restored. I will say my favorite 2 are a 1947 Knucklehead and a 1948 Panhead (pictured below). Aside from bikes I'm huge into european cars and love my bagged 2012 VW GTI, love to surf, listen to music, and draw/paint.

Anyways, I purchased a 1973 CB750 about a month or 2 ago that was in pretty bad condition but with plans on making it run reliably and have a cafe racer style I have envisioned for a while... when I got it, it was detabbed but never painted after so surface rust everywhere, horribly hacked up electrical system, no seat, no front brakes, dirty everything, leaking head, motor knocking, ugly multicolor spray painted tank, etc. Other "mods" done to it was the exhaust and rejetting. I somewhat knew what I was getting into and i got it for ridiculously cheap and figured it would be a great way to learn how to do all this stuff myself.

So far this is the list of things i have done/replaced:
new OEM wiring harness
new Ricks motorsports reg/rec
new starter solenoid
new Uni pods
new 7" headlight from DCC
new headlight brackets
"new" front brake (from a '76 750)
Hagon rear shocks
Legendary Cycles thruxton seat pan
frame hoop welded on
Biltwell grips
new clutch and brake levers
new OEM right hand switches (they were cut off before)
Shorai LFX battery
new OEM ignition switch
LED tail light (still needs to be wired up)
may be missing a few odds and ends

The bad: the motor ended up seizing up on me on a short ride recently so I will be purchasing a good running motor in the next few weeks and swap that over into the bike. I'll be taking apart the current motor and rebuilding from the ground up with a big bore kit and the necessary parts to accompany.

other than getting the motor swap done and having it run reliably while i rebuild the old one, I plan on upgrading the front end with progressive springs including a refresh on all the fork components and replacing worn out bits throughout the bike to bring it back to life as much as I can.

Its a long read but thanks for checking it out and I hope to learn a ton more, hopefully contribute when I can and meet some great people along the way!

The 1947 Knuck I mentioned above (very close to being complete)

The '48 Panhead mentioned above (rides amazingly)

An R50 I hope to get my hands on next year some time to start restoring

And lastly, part of the collection

Here's the CB750 I'm currently working on as she sits in the garage waiting for a new motor. At the time I took this pic a few weeks ago I hadn't installed the Hagon shocks yet... I'll be posting up an updated pic in the next few days

(Link to my full build is in my signature)

also, the foam pads on the seat are temporary as I get a diamond stitched brown leather seat pad made

haha yea I live about 20 minutes from Barber. That place is amazing! I've been in AL for a year and I've been 4 times already and plan to keep going plenty more. I wish there were more events like the vintage festival throughout the year though

agreed. I went in 2012 and 2013. The last year I went it was getting so crowded and to me it was becoming a lot more of a Harley event than the first year I went so I skipped this year. I have nothing against Harley's. Its just not what I go to Barber to see but in hindsight I am kicking myself for missing it this year. I will most likely make my way there next year.

Oh dang really? I can honestly say there were way more european and japanese bikes than there were HDs. I love the old Harleys (specially having grown up with them bc of my dad) but I'm a sucker for vintage european bikes... specially Triumphs, BMWs and Nortons. This was my first year going to this event and I loved everything about it. Tons of bikes of all kinds and definitely a lot of people but not to the point that it was uncomfortable, over crowded or anything like that

I was most likely being overly sensitive as I come from an area where Harley is king, to the point that to most people, nothing else even exists. I have been asked if my Moto Guzzi was a Harley at the car wash once. Seriously. It says Moto Guzzi on the tank.

Your bike collection is incredible and covers a broad range of bikes. I can appreciate that. I have been regretting missing Barber this year since it happened. I will mark my calender for next year.

haha oh wow ok gotcha. Kinda sounds like certain areas here in AL. I feel like there's alot of close-mindedness here. oh well...

Thank you. Yea my dad started this with his father (along with building hot rods and old Ford and Chevy trucks) so I grew up all around this type of stuff and basically ended up with the same passion for bikes, cars, and as a mechanical engineer like the 2 of them. Through the years the collection just keeps growing (although slower now) and I can't say there are any plans of selling off any of the bikes haha

I'm not sure I'll be living in AL bc I have plans to move onto something better (job wise) but I can say I will definitely be trying my hardest to make it next year regardless of location.
