Maybe the don't ask don't tell should be changed to mandatory service for gays.  After all, gihadists are not at all  tolerant of gays, so they should want to join up and serve the country that affords them this freedom.

I hope that was tongue in cheek Fiddy, because if you actually think there are no gays in the military or gay people wouldn't defend their freedom then you've been living in denial or don't have a clue, sexual preference doesn't make anyone morally different...
Oh and its their right, your country affords them nothing, I suppose you think their are no gay Muslims as well...? There are gay people in every walk of life, if you think otherwise you are very naive...

It is opening of a flood gate. Next in line are pedophiles, zoophiles and other xxxxfiles to fight for their rights and recognition.

I am with OP, it is wrong.

The old "it opening the flood gates" theory is absolute rubbish, homosexuals have been doing their thing since humans have been on this earth, to think otherwise is very naive and homophobic, comparing someone gay to a pedophile is about as stupid as it gets, absolutely no comparison. We recently had a politician from the far right here in Australia say the same thing and was laughed back under his rock... Pedophiles need neutering, they are a disgusting abomination, homosexuals are born like that, just as you and me and are every bit as normal..... I'm with the rest, your wrong....

In Washington State we legalized Same Sex marriage and Marijuana at the same time.

Someone told me once somewhere in the bible it says that "when two men lay together, they shall be stoned".

I guess the religious had it wrong all these years!  ;D

Seriously I have gay neighbors (actually three different households) that have been together for 20+ years. Three different couples! I'm happy they have the right to get married. They are a stabling influence in our neighborhood, their houses are all nice and well kept, they don't have a bunch of illegitimate children stealing stuff out of our yards, they don't get drunk and have the cops called on them constantly. That's would be the white trash hetrosexual household down the street!

Oh and its their right, your country affords them nothing...
I'm pretty sure that was intended TnC, Retro. But, I would differ with you on the above. Unlike Muslim countries, the U.S. does guarantee rights to homosexuals, and has for several decades. And now, they are expanding those guarantees. We are far from perfect, but still a work in progress.

Odd isn't it? The very document (US Constitution) that guarantees these rights was written by Christian men. The very group that Gay Right Advocates seem to hold in the highest contempt. In fact, our Constitution has specific reference to God-given rights and yet those who demand those rights decry that religion has nothing to do with it.

Now, I am NOT wanting this to be a parochial lecture, but it does beg the question about how someone can denounce the very essence that provides them the protection they demand. Not for a minute am I saying you must believe or agree with the author's point of view or belief system, but they certainly had foresight to provide for you despite yours. Interesting wisdom at least, don't you think?

Good post,  also. I bet your state doesn't have crack and meth dealers lining up to get their drugs legalized because pot now is...?

Cal, its the hypocrisy of the church that is so offensive, its harbored and protected gay and pedophile priests knowingly for ever,  while openly and vigorously denouncing them in public, that in itself is a total disgrace {not the gays but the actions of the self serving church}, I would leave the church out of the discussion personally, it will do nothing  but create another wedge in the discussion... ;)  Oh, and there are plenty of Gay priests too mate... ;D ;)  One thing that seems to get lost in this discussion is that men AND WOMEN are gay, it also seems that gay men are far more offensive than gay women, more hypocrisy I here you say.... ;D

No hypocrisy from me, I'm hetero but tolerant. And my jibe wasn't intending that the two women kiss, but that I kiss two women. All in fun, Mate.

Yep, not interested in bringing a church into it, but was referencing the Constituion only.

One thing that seems to get lost in this discussion is that men AND WOMEN are gay, it also seems that gay men are far more offensive than gay women, more hypocrisy I here you say.... ;D

Because that's what totally sucks about the whole deal, many (not all) lesbians are smokin hot yet want nothing to do with a man from an intimate perspective, it's just plain torture. :) I have a cousin that's gay and I swear he hangs out with some of the hottest women yet wants nothing to do with them intimately.

One thing I do find humorous is my mother in-laws family 10 siblings total which is homophobic yet my wife has an Aunt that's lesbian and she is the funniest, kindest, most self reliant of the whole group and even though she's clearly "out of the closet" no one else in the family will admit they have a sister that's lesbian.

Me I don't care who you love...

But I do care that people do not know that the principle framer of the US Constitution was a Deist who felt the bible was flawed and Christianity was (is?) riddled with irrational belief in magic. His compiled his own version of the bible removing all references to magical events, and virgin births.

The genius of the man is that he wrapped the constitution with a freedom of religion "bow" which makes it difficult for a theocracy to form here and pacified the religious members of the continental congress.

What individual do you believe was "the framer" of the Constitution? By all history I've ever read, there were 7 principal contributors. And if you are referring to Jefferson, your definition of Deism and his status are flawed (again by historical record). I offer you this as a reference: http://www.gilderlehrman.org/history-by-era/age-jefferson-and-madisonreligion/essays/thomas-jefferson-and-deism

I think there is significant "revisionist" history at work to describe Jefferson (assuming that's who you're referring to) as someone who thought of the religious as believers in "magic".

Sorry mate but homosexuals are born like it and pedophiles either have a mental problem, were abused themselves  or just do it because it turns them on, completely different. There is NOTHING in common between Homosexuals and pedophiles and there is a plethora of evidence to back that up, pedophiles are criminals....A common trait among pedophiles is that they were abused  and just continue the behavior, thats hardly being born like it.... Pedophilia is mainly a sexual preference, a clear choice...

We all know about the theory that the most actively bigoted anti-gay types are often deeply closeted themselves, and are so angry with openly gay people because they know they themselves will never come out. Larry Craig getting blowies in an airport bathroom. Pastor Tom Brock saying Tornadoes are god's vengence for gays. Ted Haggard. Scads of priests. Just sayin.

Homophobic? Maybe You’re Gay
By RICHARD M. RYAN and WILLIAM S. RYAN
Published: April 27, 2012

WHY are political and religious figures who campaign against gay rights so often implicated in sexual encounters with same-sex partners?

In recent years, Ted Haggard, an evangelical leader who preached that homosexuality was a sin, resigned after a scandal involving a former male prostitute; Larry Craig, a United States senator who opposed including sexual orientation in hate-crime legislation, was arrested on suspicion of lewd conduct in a men’s bathroom; and Glenn Murphy Jr., a leader of the Young Republican National Convention and an opponent of same-sex marriage, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge after being accused of sexually assaulting another man.

One theory is that homosexual urges, when repressed out of shame or fear, can be expressed as homophobia. Freud famously called this process a “reaction formation” — the angry battle against the outward symbol of feelings that are inwardly being stifled. Even Mr. Haggard seemed to endorse this idea when, apologizing after his scandal for his anti-gay rhetoric, he said, “I think I was partially so vehement because of my own war.”

It’s a compelling theory — and now there is scientific reason to believe it. In this month’s issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, we and our fellow researchers provide empirical evidence that homophobia can result, at least in part, from the suppression of same-sex desire.

Our paper describes six studies conducted in the United States and Germany involving 784 university students. Participants rated their sexual orientation on a 10-point scale, ranging from gay to straight. Then they took a computer-administered test designed to measure their implicit sexual orientation. In the test, the participants were shown images and words indicative of hetero- and homosexuality (pictures of same-sex and straight couples, words like “homosexual” and “gay”) and were asked to sort them into the appropriate category, gay or straight, as quickly as possible. The computer measured their reaction times.

The twist was that before each word and image appeared, the word “me” or “other” was flashed on the screen for 35 milliseconds — long enough for participants to subliminally process the word but short enough that they could not consciously see it. The theory here, known as semantic association, is that when “me” precedes words or images that reflect your sexual orientation (for example, heterosexual images for a straight person), you will sort these images into the correct category faster than when “me” precedes words or images that are incongruent with your sexual orientation (for example, homosexual images for a straight person). This technique, adapted from similar tests used to assess attitudes like subconscious racial bias, reliably distinguishes between self-identified straight individuals and those who self-identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual.

Using this methodology we identified a subgroup of participants who, despite self-identifying as highly straight, indicated some level of same-sex attraction (that is, they associated “me” with gay-related words and pictures faster than they associated “me” with straight-related words and pictures). Over 20 percent of self-described highly straight individuals showed this discrepancy.

Notably, these “discrepant” individuals were also significantly more likely than other participants to favor anti-gay policies; to be willing to assign significantly harsher punishments to perpetrators of petty crimes if they were presumed to be homosexual; and to express greater implicit hostility toward gay subjects (also measured with the help of subliminal priming). Thus our research suggests that some who oppose homosexuality do tacitly harbor same-sex attraction.

What leads to this repression? We found that participants who reported having supportive and accepting parents were more in touch with their implicit sexual orientation and less susceptible to homophobia. Individuals whose sexual identity was at odds with their implicit sexual attraction were much more frequently raised by parents perceived to be controlling, less accepting and more prejudiced against homosexuals.

It’s important to stress the obvious: Not all those who campaign against gay men and lesbians secretly feel same-sex attractions. But at least some who oppose homosexuality are likely to be individuals struggling against parts of themselves, having themselves been victims of oppression and lack of acceptance. The costs are great, not only for the targets of anti-gay efforts but also often for the perpetrators. We would do well to remember that all involved deserve our compassion.

+1 on that.

A lot of talk about the "American Ideal" has gone on over the years. People went off to War to fight for the American way etc.

The American Ideal has been evolving and Constitutional rights have been expanded to groups heretofore never granted. They had these rights, but they were never explicitly addressed.

To be and American you must be willing to be uncomfortable. We all have things that are legal, but we don't like.

If you live your life according to your own personal code you can be quite comfortable. You have the right to live that way. That is they way it was meant to be.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

There is some debate whether Jefferson was a deist or not, there is however considerable evidence that he understood we exist in a world that is predictable thru the study of natural laws, not subject to the whims of a god.  What ever he believed he knew that no being magically selected a specific family to rule a people.  He understood this to the level that the very first sentence in the first Amendment is the fundamental tool courts use to prevent  the the formation of the theocracy so many believe would be nirvana.

The legal frame work supported by Jefferson's bill of rights has broken down another religious belief, that who one loves should be controlled by a government.

I'm unsure of what or where you derive your perspective, but I've never seen nor heard in the US of a "religious belief, that who one loves should be controlled by a government" ever proffered. Again, I'd describe much of this as revisionist history.

For clarification, those who oppose homosexual marriages based upon religious grounds do so as the term/tradition/ceremony have a strict and historical definition in their lives. Nowhere have I ever heard it said you/he/she/they can't or shouldn't love someone. You're conflating issues to support your perspective.

And yet, you and I agree, that despite anyone's objections, the Constitution provides for an individual to pursue this "ceremony" if intrinsic to their happiness. Marriage has never been defined by the Constitution as being between hetero sexuals. That's a biblical precedent.

Live and let live. I just hope those who don't agree with practicing Christians/Catholics/etc are as equally respectful of opposing views. Unlike the Mayor of Houston and her minions...

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

vames beat me to it with his long post  but it could be condensed down to this common misquote from Shakespeare, "methinks thou dost protest too much."

For all the whining about how awful and disgusting it is, some of you keep thinking about it, getting upset about it,  and posting about it.  What's up with that?  Maybe concentrate on your own relationship and stop fantasizing about what others are doing in the privacy of their own lives.

Support is now at about 54% and rising nationwide so the trend is obvious.  Same sex marriage bans are being declared unconstitutional in state after state.  We all like the Constitution don't we?  The writing is on the wall and the Supreme Court will likely put it to rest soon.  Time to move on...the battle is lost.

I agree mate.
Let it be.
Agree or disagree, if they're happy together, that's a good thing and not intruding on others lives?

There's enough sh1t going on in other parts of this globe that is making a lot of peoples lives an unbearable fcuking misery.
Including kids, which rips my guts.
That's what I'd be focussing on and standing tall and united against these bloody cockroaches who will eventually be held to account for doing what they are doing.
If I was you
I'd be worried about me.
