points plate isue
« on: October 15, 2014, 07:04:35 PM »
76 550 k, . getting to the timing, adjusted point gap to spec, then to get the timing light on @ F mark, had to move the plate clockwise till it stopped,(screws @ far left of slots) the light comes on just before the F mark ( both 1-4 and 2-3)...no further adjustment available.Point gaps were unchanged after timing adjusted. New points. What gives, is this common for these bikes? Not run the bike yet since the adjustment.

Thanks for any insight

It's not common for all bikes.  But, many have had issues with Diachi brand points.  You may have to shim the points plate to eliminate lateral play if it doesn't fit tightly in the engine mount posts.  You can't rely on the point springs to hold the plate in proper position when the screws are loose and the point cam is turning.

There is, or was a FAQ entry about this.
