This is a picture of my rear tire with over 4000 miles on it.

Tail of the dragon, NC mountain roads and 90mph long and hard push on Interstate 81 in heavy rain are included in those miles.

I say Shinkos are good tires and my opinion is based on real life experience.

Well, that's good to know. I just got a set for my 550, and one of my moto friends told me that a Shinko is the only tire he's ever slid out with. Good to know that they at least hold up!

I have a Shinko on the rear of my CX500 that looks just like that. I have no idea how many miles are on it. I just bought a set of Kenda 761s that I thought looked pretty kool and have decent reviewer ratings. They should be in tomorrow :)

I like Kenda 761, I think Andy run them for some time - and he puts many miles on his motorcycles.

This thread exists because when I bought Shinkos, I had many theoreticians (aka smart a$$ :))finding reasons why they are not good tires - I felt obliged to publish my experience.

Why is anyone who disagrees with you a smart ass?  I have had a set of 712's on my 750 for 6000 mikes.  Of course, the rear is now shot.  The reason they are not good tires is because they have very unpredictable grip.  Nearly lost the front end last week when the front pushed out from under me and slid about a foot sideways.  They may be fine for careful putt putting around, especially at their price.  It seems like they are ok as long as you are extremely careful about proper inflation and making sure they are warmed up before putting any faith in them.  More expensive tires I have had are so good that a couple pounds low and just got on 'em cold and you are still fine.  Prokop, I am truely happy to hear that you are happy with your cheap tire purchase.  I would be lying if I said that I was.

Your experience may be different. But the key word is experience. I got load of opinion from people who never tried them.

On my build i will try 404s, I heard good things about them - but till I put few thousand miles on them I would never dare to bash them or praise them.

i had shinko barracuda on my 750 for a lil over 5 years.  good traction in the wet as well as dry, and they held up well
now i have bridgestone spitfires because i couldnt get the barracudas anymore

I had a great experience with my 712 (only on the rear) this summer, had no issues in the little bit i rode it wet either.
I probably dont push my bike like some, but ive scraped the pegs before, and never felt any questionable loss of traction, and after i hardtail my bike , im sure i will push it hard even less.

Not sure if its true i heard these used to be yokohamas,?! & that they sold their motorcycle tire line. any truth to that?

I have had Shinko 712's on my CB550 commuter bike for 5600 miles now. No complaints in wet or dry. They have lots of life left and the rear shows no sign of squaring off. IMO they are the best budget tires available.
