Rear Wheel question 16" on CB550??
« on: October 17, 2014, 12:25:11 PM »
Hey guys. It was only when I installed new tires did I realize that the rear wheel on my CB550 was actually 16". I think they come stock 18" but the PO neglected to tell me. 1 of the rear sprocket mounts is stripped and I'm looking for a new rear wheel. Anyone have any suggestions on what bike I could find a 16" rear wheel that's compatible with the CB550? I don't think I could go any larger in diameter because I have 13.25" Hagon rear shocks and a larger tire would hit the ground on the center stand.

Yea I think the hub is stripped unfortunately. I was just thinking I should just get a new back wheel. I can't take pictures until I take off the wheel. What wheel do you have?

Sounds like you only need a hub replaced or the stud. I've got another rear Hun of you need, or snap a picture and let's see what damage you have-

This is a closeup of the rear wheel.

Actually realized that I had a picture taken from when I first took off the wheel. See pic attached. So the bolts can come out. That's not the issue. Its that they don't torque into the part of the hub. Now that I think of it... Couldn't I just get this part of the hub?

Yes the drive pops right out. I'd just helicoil the offending hole, put a new stud in and call it good. I have a couple 16' tires out in my shop, there is a major difference in height, if your 16" tire is tall, a standard 18" might be about the same.

I'm thinking about just buying a new sprocket side. How would i go about removing the bearings, etc from the old one? I can't remember if it actually just bolts off and exposes only the sprocket hub.
