Topic: I know this came from Somewhere

Hey Guys,

I have a little problem.  I have this rubber washer and I don't know where it came from.
I know that it has to be somewhere up front because that is the only area I disassembled.
I thought I took pictures of where it came from, but can't find any pictures that show it.

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out.

I know it seems to fit inside the headlight ears on he lower lip and I looked at the fiche but it isn't there.

Looks like the dust seal at the bottom of the steering stem. Did you replace or repack the steering bearings?

Yep, I sure did replace the steering bearings.  Put in the tapered All Balls bearing set.
I did have all the proper parts when I put it together.  I will check and see if that is it.

The All Balls likely came with a seal in the kit.

It is the stem dust  seal....helps keep water out too.

Amazing!!!!!  I just checked my pictures of the Triple Tree, and there it was!!!!!
I guess I ordered a spare, but for the life of me I have no idea why!!!!

As bwaller noted, you probably would have used the seal that came with the All Balls bearing kit. The one you have pictured looks like the stock dust seal.

You are absolutely correct!!!!

That is exactly what I did.

As a side note, while I'm putting my forks back together, I have replacement rubber cushions for both the top and lower headlight ears.  While putting one fork back together, I couldn't figure out where the lower cushion was supposed to go.  I started a thread to ask that question.   I was told that it went inside the headlight ear above the bottom triple clamp.  So, that's where I put it for now. 

Then I saw that flat "washer" sitting on my bench and wondered if it belonged inside the headlight ear.  The only place it could possibly go was to cover the inside lip below the lower triple clamp.  So, I put it in there.  Reason I did that was that there was a scratch line on the fork tube, right about where that lip is.  I figure that lip must have been in contact with the fork tube at some point.  Don't know how, but it's the only thing I can figure.  So, since this part of the tube is not involved in fork action, and in an effort to keep from scratching the tube and possibly keep water out from under the rubber fork boot, I think I'll leave it there and order another one for the other side.  

Anybody see any reason not to do this??
