65 mph top speed in Britain? - interesting article
« on: March 29, 2007, 09:29:46 AM »
Sorry if this has already been posted, but there is a move in Britain to limit the top speed of motorcycles and scooters.  I love the testimony that there is no reason why anyone should go over 65 mph.  I don't know if British drivers are anything like ours, but how about to avoid being run over from behind.

Ah yes, but if everyone is limited to 65mph then this is not an issue. What, you mean that this would only apply to motorcycles??  Surely they jest. Is it April 1st?

We need more than 65mph to keep in front of the MP's Bentley Continental which will do 198mph.
I rest my case.

It will never happen.

This proposal was produced by a Select Committee. Select Committees produce reports which the Government respond formally to. In no way is the Government expected to agree with all the recommendations and very often they don't.

I see no mileage in this one, especially as one of the prime movers in this one leads the "Slower Speeds Initiative"

Gives the tabloids, bike press and us something to talk about though, doesn't it?

I propose we limit everyone to no more than two wheels under their ass, and bright pink bikes and helmets for all the rookie riders that my new initiative will create.
Do you think this will fly?

If you did 65mph here you'd be grill goo from everything else on the road. At 75 you are still in the 10% of the slowest things on the road. 80-90mph is about the average to higher average. Hotshots are in the 110-125mph area. They fund the policeman's coffers.

Britain has more government video cameras than anywhere else on earth. They are making more and more of them capable of reading license plates. The authorities are "discussing" road use taxes that make you pay for driving by the mile, calculated from the cameras that watch everywhere you go. Naturally they can just add a speeding charge if you go 65 miles in less than an hour.

I heard on the radio the other night that Britain has 20% of the worlds cctv. The presenter was saying that He'd been in one of the control centres where some of the cameras were capable of zooming in far enough for the presenter to read what was on one drivers tie  :o
The idea here is apparantly to use cameras for checking tax discs. Though I have no doubt that if they can catch a few speeders and people not wearing seatbelts aswell then all the better for the govt coffers  >:(

I see our "Shameless" catch phrase has found a home across the pond!  ;) ;D

How many states are still limited to 65 MPH? I know Kentucky is but all of the surrounding states have boosted it up to 70.
