Dyna S Timing. I know... Which engine mark to start with?
« on: October 24, 2014, 09:36:01 AM »
I understand you need to hold open/rotate the black advancer to all the way open (CW) to time for full advance, but before you do that, which mark on the timing plate is supposed to align with the mark on the engine?

Do I set it to F as if I was timing for points, but then hold the advancer open and adjust the timing there? I don't fully understand and have read 50 threads but none spell it all out.

Thank you for your patience, it is Friday after all.

Start the bike up and running.  Roll throttle and hold it to about 2500rpm.  Adjust the plate to the full advance mark (the far right mark)

What about for static timing? Don't have a light.

What about for static timing? Don't have a light.

turn the engine until F mark aligned with engine case mark (this is for 1-4).  i use spare spark plug and attach to plug wire #4 and rest it against the engine case.  turn ignition key and emergency switch to ON.  then slowly turn the plate until the plug sparks.

Do you have enough money to buy a 12V lightbulb at your local hardware/auto store and some wire?
Then you can make a timing light.

A dynamic timing light works better with the electronic ignitions.

If you can't afford or don't have access to a few impotant tools how do you expect work on these old bikes? You're also going to need a vac sync tool at some time as well as many other tools. Just sayin'

Thanks for all the wisdom for everyone who can't answer a simple question and has to say do it dynamically or die. People have been doing things manually on these bikes for 40 years, yes newer stuff helps but it is necessary? No.

Thanks Dave :)

Funny how whan you give someone an answer they just don't want to listen!

There is no "don't want to listen" here. I've asked about static timing, not dynamic. I asked a very specific question about static timing that isn't clear in the Dyna S static timing instructions and have yet to receive an answer.

Gold just told you like Dave said I just gave you info on how to make a horribly cheap static timing light.
Sounds from here like someone isn't listening.

Yes they have, with tools. the statement about dynamic versus static was pertaining to electronic ignitions. if you don't want the best advice from experienced people, you might consider shying away from asking vague and perceived lazy questions.

Every answer given has been given numerous times before. Did you search the threads? That can be done statically whilst you sit in your chair. Or, if your a tablet kinda guy, dynamically while you sip coffee and ride the metro.

Should have probably read my first post, then would understand what I asked.

I'm glad there is so much information on dynamic timing, that will come in handy. I simply asked for something very specific on static timing and am getting flamed.

I do mean it when I say thank you for the dynamic timing tips, I was only trying to get my question answered is all. I am grateful for any time that someone takes to help another person out, and perhaps you are right about perceived laziness, it's not always the easiest to clearly get everything across when typing on a phone.

I don't really understand your question or what you want to do; maybe you can elaborate. You can happily time the Dyna statically with a bulb, a couple of wires and a couple of alligator clips as per Dyna's instructions, which I strongly suspect are available online. It's what I do with mine and it works fine. I check the timing once in a blue moon and it's good, that's the joy of electronic ignition.

Then again, I don't understand why you are being given a hard time for asking a simple question.
