oil to top end question
« on: October 24, 2014, 05:15:25 PM »
I feel like I know the answer but here goes. Engine is cb750k5.
If I was getting enough oil to 1&2 cam and rockers, it would be fairly obvious?
If I'm not sure, them I'm probably not?

I know there's oil getting to right side 3&4,, I can get a few droplets pop out of #4 exhaust tappet.
When i run engine with tappet covers off.  But I'm not seeing oil pop out of #1 ex tappet.  You can see the cam towers and that cavity have a film of oil, But its not splashing out the tappet hole, and i m not seeing the cavity fill up.

My toolbox consists mainly of hammers.

You should SEE equal amounts of oil spray or droplets on each end of the motor. A good way to check is to use a small flashlight and look at the rocker pins and the rocker pads on the cam.  Another way to check is to remove four inspection caps and place a clean rag over the cover. Then check the rag to see if the spray is equal. And yet another way is pull the plugs and run the starter motor. While doing this after an oil change, I have watched old oil come to the cam for a second or three, followed by fresh oil.

I feel like I'm struggling too much to see enough oil on the left side, 1&2. I'll give
Another shot using the starter test you describe, without plugs.  If not satisfied I guess I'll have to own up and get ready for an engine pull.

edit:

ran the tappets off/plugs out/hit the starter test.  can definitely see oil flowing (oozing) on right side, in between 3&4.  if its flowing on the left side, 1&4 its certainly not
obvious.

this bike sat for quite a long time in a warehouse and ive put about 700 miles on it in the year or so ive owned it.  i should focus on the benefits of doing a pull and cleaning
out the passages now before its too late.
